While I was partially trolling in the lead-up to this one, I did believe Hopkins could win the fight. Most people will overlook this fact, but Hopkins had the right idea game plan. He was using his feet similarly to what I was anticipating/expecting, but Kovalev used his feet tremendously well, too - far better than I imagined he could. His feet may not be as good as Hopkins', but it didn't matter. His feet are perfect for his style, and he's more effective at moving around than I had prefigured. Kovalev has a higher ring IQ than I'd guessed as well.
simmer down, beavis. the man was wrong but he handled being wrong like a man, which is more than i can say for a lot of the scrubs making excuses after the fact. why dont you handle being right with the same grace he is handleing being wrong.
I won't be saying that either Rums! :good Hopkins going the distance at almost age FIFTY is an incredible performance! No other fighter has been able to do that to Kovalev so far... Cheers :hi:
I'm with you I have never seen such a beat down And I think the entrance was insanely stupid-maybe wrestling style Bernards an ass But I hope he's ok
Typical rookie comment. Best ever chin was Chuvalo followed by Ali. It's easy to take a punch when you're hiding in a shell the whole time and rolling away.
Actually, it wasn't the right game plan at all. He did nothing to make Kovalev back up into a straight line like he's prone to do when his opponent is pressing the action. Bernard didn't jab and didn't try much to throw sneaky overhand rights. He was just being cagey and that simply was not going to win the fight. With as accurate as Hop is, he missed a huge opportunity to counter Kovalev's overhand rights and missed left hooks.
:good Honestly, I'd still peg this Hopkins to have a very real shot at beating Stevenson, who's way more likely to gas and easier to hit with the right hand. I give Hopkins credit- he fought to survive, and he did. I know fans may not typically be big on moral victories, but lasting all 12 against Kovalev with the shots Kovalev was landing is something to feel good about. I also respect that he didn't look to the ref, try any funny business, or try to turn the fight too dirty. Classy post-fight interview, as well.
Kovalev is a good boxer but let's not get carried away. He beat a man who is 50. Grant it......it's not an ordinary 50 year old man. It's Bhop......But Kovalev has liabilities and he's very beatable. It's just the light heavyweight division isn't exactly talent rich. The top guys aren't going to be headed to the hall outside of Hopkins. Kovalev is the best of a very weak division. I do like his style, demeanor and qualities as a fighter but if Kovalev was a welterweight. ......or a jr welterweight he wouldn't be at the top of the food chain.
Great performance last night from Kovalev, showed by winning so convincingly on points he was more than just a puncher. We saw him unveil the excellent footwork that we had only seen glimpses of before. Yes Hopkins was nearly 50 but Hopkins was a top 3 light heavyweight and a proven top fighter. The manner of Kovalev's win proved a lot. A quick KO while impressive would not have shown the full range of skills Kovalev posseses and left us with unanswered questions.
