GGG-Kovalev comparison

Both are the truths, future HOF

 

Kovalev is the less slick and more ploddy. GGG is better p4p I'd say.

 

Golovkin is the better fighter, He will archieve more and will go further.

 

Kovalev I feel has better offensive game, GGG is better all around.

 

Kovalev is a rare beast but triple G is one of (if not the most) clever & talented aggressive boxers ever & p4p an even harder puncher.

 

I like them both very much bt I can't say GGG is better. he allowed Stevens to land to much and showed a flaw that could be exposed. Aloso with win over hopkins Kovalev has better fighter on resume. GGG has not fought someone at B hop's level

 

I think GGG feet are faster, if it is not immediately apparent its because he is even better at stalking. Its like a magic show, people are watching whats going on upstairs and miss whats going on downstairs. Pirog had similar attributes.

Also , need to look at max footspeed while on balance. A good fighter is not always moving feet as fast as possible - in fact when stalking , a measured approach is better because you are on balance to throw at a target trying to move away, and able to respond to your opponent. Golovkin is almost always able to land punches on targets trying to move away, and often they arent able to and get trapped.

Kovalev may glide across the ring slightly faster, but his legs are also longer as he is a larger man fighting 2 divisions up.

 

A flaw that could be exposed by a 160 that hits even harder than Stevens? Stevens has many flaws, lack of power is not one of them. I think people focus on this too much, because even Ward gets hit. What doesnt happen to either guy is taking critical hits on chin or liver, or get landed on in combination.


I agree that Kovalev resume is now a notch above GGG though, that GGG has yet to face someone of BHop's stature is undeniably true.

 

They are actually very different fighters in terms of technique, though the aggressive styles huge KO records and Vs at the end of the names tend to get them lumped together.

Golovkin is actually the more methodically relentless 'crusher' of the two, relying on a remarkably understated defense and constant and unflagging come-forward pressure, whereas Kovalev relies much more on his impressive (for the weight) mobility to keep the fight at his preferred distance where he has the range and timing to drop his bombs whilst denying his opponent the ability to fire back. (if that sounds like revisionism feel free to read back through my historical posts on Kovalev - one of the most significant attributes I've always praised in him on has been his mobility and control of range).

Both guys, of course, have the kinda eye watering power that tends to keep opponents on the back foot anyway, but which is only part of their games.

 

I think GGG has more one shot power, he's more fluid and has better chin.

I am just saying that GGG is willing to engage and trade punches more than Kovalev showed he was last night.
If you fight long enough with that fearless attitude that GGG showed against a hard puncher like Stevens, the chance of getting caught with a critical shot is more.
We have not seen GGG in with a true technician like Bernard. Will he look as immpressive when he is missing and getting countered?
Kovalev fought a very skilled and controled fight and did not allow himself to be drawn in with the WAY MORE EXPERIENCED fighter's game.
Will GGG show that level of discipline if he were to fight Ward? Too soon to make that guess. We need to see GGG in against a true champion to know what his full potential is. I believe GGG will do great but seeing is better than believing.

 

I think p4p Kovalev does in fact have faster hands. In absolute terms, its hard to judge. Kovalev definitely has a quicker appearing hands. He fights with a somewhat more "jittery" style, and as Koba points out is moving his feet quick to control range. He also feints in a more jittery and obvious style.

When talking about max footspeed, Golovkin can move forward and back pretty quick when needed, is what I was getting at. He doesnt always choose to move at max speed though. Its one of those things that can be really hard to judge, because both guys tend to be where they need to be when they need to be there.
