He definitely learned a lot from the old man that's for sure but he wasn't going to lose. I was pulling for Nard but in my heart I knew he was pushing the envelope.

There’s a lot to be said for how Kovalev confounds the technique-power dichotomy that seems apparent in how we view lots of fighters. Kovalev gets lots of stoppages, but as this fight demonstrates, it was obviously more than hasty to assume that it was his power alone that was responsible for those. Likewise, while I’m the first to lament the general lack of educated pressure in boxing today, that does not mean that anyone who applies pressure is simply not technical in their application of it.

Now I don’t think everyone who picked Hopkins ran afoul of this, as Hopkins’ own greatness and resume could justify favoring him in this fight. At the same time, portraying Kovalev as a crude boxer who relied on his power never made as much sense to me. Cloud-Campillo was a crude brawler against a slick brawler; Kovalev-Campillo was not, and the difference in the two fights was not simply Cloud possessing less power or Campillo being worse against Kovalev. Kovalev’s power made it easier for him to win fights quickly, but it was never the only tool in his possession, and indeed its overwhelming effectiveness up to this point was a result of his other capabilities, which were clearly on display tonight.
