That's not the whole story though is is. Blackwell has been stepped up repeatedly when he was underprepared, under trained, physically immature, too young, injured etc. He would go from fighting a string of cab drivers to Martin Murray. Another few road sweepers, the be thrown to the wolves versus BJS. A half dozen council workers later...Max Bursak etc etc. At the same age, under the same conditions, I doubt many of the other domestic middles would do any better. Surely THATS the point, no?
Facial damage means literally nothing if it doesn't contribute to a stoppage. There was no doubt that Murray won both fights, while most had Blackwell ahead it wasn't exactly a robbery.
Actually there is plenty of doubt Murray won both fights. Lots of people reckon he didn't win the second fight recently. Personally I thought murray just barely nicked both fights, but was plodding and unimpressive in both. Blackwell IMO fought better, looked better, etc..versus Khomitsky.
If that fight had gone 10, he would have stopped Khomitsky, who is always aggressive to begin with. It took a couple of rounds for Blackwell to warm up in that one. In the sixth round he had Khomitsky ready to go, but just ran out of time.
Yep. good points. But the fact remains he's a young boxer in his mid 20s who has just drawn with a 40 year old,and big things have been predicted for him. He's a decent fighter, yes, but I thought the draw was about right. AS i say,I take your points but maybe his management should address them.
Indeed, Ted. The two main issues his management need to tackle are inactivity and stepping him up progressively by degrees. Both these areas were disastrous up until now. Hopefully that changes now. That said he has learned "on the job" by now, and that hard-earned experience combined with his natural heart and toughness means Blackwell is probably a stiff test for any domestic middle today IMO.
I like Blackwell I really do and agree with all points in this discussion. However as somebody else alluded too he has never been on the right side off the promoters and lets face it being with hennessy never will.To get the fights he wants i.e the big fights in division now like lee, bjs, eubank jr,macklin he needs someone different. Maybe thats a bit harsh him being on channel 5 now and new with hennessy but lets face it hennessy wont stickup the money to give this guy a proper fight at proper notice. He will always be a test rather than the test and a yardstick for british champions who want to either win a belt or step up.Sad but true.
just watched Blackwell struggle against the 14-25-0 nathan king could quite easily have been loss number 4 for blackwell
Blackwell is a very underrated fighter, who given the proper management could really make some noise.
Wonder what stick some of the other domestic middle weights would get for fighting the 14-25-0 nathan king in their 20th pro fight? And nearly losing! Great signing Mick Hennessy
King is a big light heavy blackwell is a middleweight. King came in at short notice so I wudnt look into his record to much.
What are the chances of Eubank jr, ryder, BJS etc facing Martin Murray in their 9th fight, at age 20? Then BJS, Bursak, Khomitsky.... Give it a rest willya!
Don't forget the fact eubank turned down.a final eliminator against nick and fw had to pay blackwell step aside money for bjs v eubank to happen.
