Hopkins is a counter puncher. What he didn't know was that Kovalev too is a counter puncher and a much bigger one that Hopkins. that KD basically told Hopkins, you've underestimated this guys skill level big time. for Hopkins, it was his worst nightmare come true. He jn against a guy who was bigger, stronger than him, hit harder than him and what Kovalev did was take away Hopkjns biggest weapon, the counter punch by counterinv with his own harder hittjng shots. that's why Hopkjns had to resort to what he did which was run, survive and look for a one punch ko.
Give Kovalev some credit, he did a damn good job of timing and countering Bernard. I feel like other than Chad Dawson, Kovalev might be the only guy B-Hop has faced that would beat him the majority of the time on his best night. The way he cut off the ring, timed and countered jabs, and controlled range seemed like it was absolutely hellish for Bernard's fighting style.
Kovalev is a mix between Julian Jackson and Pernel Whitaker. Hes the super fighter everyones been waiting for to take boxing to the next level.
I know what the OP is saying... Kovalev didn't so much outbox Hopkins as simply overwhelm him with vastly superior strength and power. Hopkins was definitely in survival mode, even tho he was completely dominated you can't really outbox someone that isn't throwing punches and just looking for a way to last 12 rounds
He did Yes Hopkins was fun shy after the KD But Kovalev patiently pressured him to the ropes landed and got ou Even Hopkins said it prevented him from getting set Also he countered Hopkins pretty much whenever Bernard opened up He never let Hopkins in the range he needed to land or clinch or use his head
So his perfectly executed and effective body jabs keeping Hopkins where he wanted him weren't Kovalev managing to outbox Hopkins, but "simply overwhelm him with strength and power"?
