Floyd was bigger and younger, but it was still a very good Marquez that he dominated like no one has come remotely close to before or since. How impressive a win was it considering the dominating fashion of it?
I give very little credit for that. A great welterweight beefing up to middleweight to dominate an older lightweight going up to welter is comical. That would be like Carlos Monzon ballooning up to light heavyweight to take on Emile Griffith or Jose Napoles.
I don't think much of it ... that victory is tainted in my opinion, even though I think Mayweather would probably beat any version of the great Juan Manuel Marquez.
I don't. Marquez - physically - looked like sh*t, got dragged up TWO weight-classes and was fighting a LMW that night. And Floyd still couldn't pull the trigger. Completely pointless fight.
That's harsh I think, considering that Marquez would beat Pac twice at the weight. And while he moved up directly from LW, he probably drained quite a bit to make 135 in previous fights. Anyone know how much he and Floyd weighed in the ring? And it wasn't just that Floyd won - he had utterly had his way with him. No one else has come close to coming close to that.
Mayflower made the guy look like a 12 year old ama going into the gym for about the 5th time. And it had NOTHING to do with any size advantage. He just " outclassed " the guy in every department. He forced Marquez to lead when he didn't want to, and countered him to bits for his troubles. He lead himself when he felt like it and scored at will. Skill wise it was a total mismatch. The frightening thing about it is, you got the feeling he could do it again anytime he liked.
Of course it had to do with size advantage. His substantial reach advantage helped him to get off first. That's just basic. Add a substantial speed advantage to that... In terms of pure technical skill, I think that was on Marquez's side. Despite Floyd's overall superiority.
Bad stylistic matchup for Marquez, but more importantly he was the same fading fighter we saw at lightweight. Then he got on the 'roids.
I think he looked everything but faded against Casamayor. Agree that it was a bad stylistical matchup, though.
marquez' punches had ZERO effect against mayweather, such was the weight difference. the power comparison was like an eight yr old fighting a teenager (even though floyd is a bit of a feather). that whole situation is why some people call him fraud mayweather.
They didn't have much effect because they very rarely landed cleanly. But it is true that Floyd was the bigger and stronger of the two, and that of course helped. The advantage wasn't larger than several of Floyd's opponents have had over him, though. Castillo, Coralles and Cotto for example.
Pure garbage by people who want to discredit Mayweather's performance. Funny how when asked if the weight had anything to do with the outcome Marquez said something like " Yes I am not used to being this heavy, which made me slower " he didn't claim that Mayweather was too big or heavy.
I rate it highly. Floyd came off a layoff to completely dominate the pfp no 2, who would later prove his worth at the weightclass while at a more advanced age. The size difference was quite a bit less than what Floyd gave up to Canelo. Less than what he gave up to maidana too. Marquez has proved that he can deal with faster and bigger men by using skill. In this fight, he was the guy with less skill for the only time in his career. I vividly remember the picks for Marquez rolling in.
I dont give it much credit because it was before Marquez got on roids and Mayweather used every advantage he had and then some to make sure Marquez would be as non-competitive as possible. Perfect example of how modern fights are fixed without being fixed in the classic sense of the word.
