Sailor Tom Sharkey vs Joe Louis anyone?

I think Tom might give Louis a few nightmares along the way but Louis should knock him out and beat his face into burger meat within 8 or 9 rounds.

It would be an interesting fight.

 

Because he didn't take a shot as well as Galento?

 

I'd say he took one better.

Sharkey was stopped 4 times in 52 fights and kod in 3 of those stoppages.
Galento was stopped 6 times in 112 fights and never knocked out.

 

Who weighed 154 lbs? McCoy STATED his weight was 156. He may have even weighed more. No matter. If Galento had fought like Sharkey did the 1st 3 rounds against McCoy, letting himself get hit by Kid's fast, explosive punches over and over without return, then yes. It doesn't defy logic that McCoy, who had a big punch, could drop and hurt Tony. The thing people seem to forget is that after Tom stopped trying to box and started fight his own fight, he took everything McCoy threw at him for another seven rounds without flinching. Instead, people want to freeze this moment in time and look at it as an "Aha" moment in regards to Tom's chin. Something NOBODY was doing at the time.

Galento was stopped by every big puncher he faced. Other than an early bout that we know next to nothing about, Sharkey stood up to every big banger he faced and was more successful against them. The stoppages came after the 2nd Jeffries fight, a battle it was agreed upon that pretty much took everything out of Sharkey.

Prime for prime Sharkey was considered the more durable fighter. Galento never took a beating like Sharkey and lived until the final bell.

 

Sharkey was stopped by the biggest puncher he faced.TWICE.And he weighed inside the Lhvy limit.
Galento was stopped by atg punchers Louis, Baer,the other stoppages were through injuries .No One KO'D him.
Sharkey was dropped twice by a small middleweight,and kod twice by a super middle , it's there and can't be denied.

He was done in the second fight. In the first fight he took an incredible amount of punishment; round after round of hellacious shots from the most feared puncher of the day. Think Galento could have taken it? I don't.

His best weight was 180-185.

Put him in during Sharkey's era where they were less likely to stop fights on cuts and being injured and you'd see more straight KO losses. Put him in with Sharkey's opposition and see if he could take what Sharkey took. Does Galento last 45 total rounds with Jeffries? Does he last as long as Sharkey with Fitz (1st fight) if he took those shots?

Already been addressed. Sometimes we have to go beyond Boxrec and read the post-fight accounts(not saying you haven't. Just stating for the record). Nobody was questioning Sharkey's chin or durability after this fluke incident. NO ONE. Only you, over a century later.

The historical record. And let's not forget how badly Al Gainer (a light-heavy) was hurting Galento before the cut eye stoppage. If that fight had been held in Sharkey's era they wouldn't have stopped it. Galento was in a bad way and most likely would have been KO'd within 10.

 

1.I was referring to Fitz ,who twice kod Sharkey.

2.Put Sharkey in with Louis, and the Baer brothers, see how long he lasts then.
3.Jeffries was a grinder, he didn't hit like Louis or Baer.
4.Galento would last longer than Sharkey.

I've read the accounts of Sharkey's fights and also detailed accounts of his deliberate fouls on such as Choynsky,and Goddard.

A green Jack Johnson sparred with Sharkey and the Sailor found him impossible to hit.
Sharkey was wide open, the idea of him beating a precision puncher like Louis, a banger who also possessed a face busting jab ,fluid combinations of deadly power and speed is farcical
I think Louis would absolutely destroy Sharkey.
