Wladimir became WBO World champion in 2000 by beating Chris Byrd.

He then went on to make 5 defences of that belt against:

Derrick Jefferson, Charles Shufford, Frans Botha, Ray Mercer and Jameel McCline before losing to Corrie Sanders.

He then became the IBF World Champion by beating Chris Byrd in 2006 and made 3 defences against:

Calvin Brock, Ray Austin and Lamon Brewster.

He became unifed IBF/WBO Champion by beating Sultan Ibragimov in 2008 and defends those titles against:

Tony Thompson, Hasim Rahman, Ruslan Chagaev, Eddie Chambers and Samuel Peters.

He then becomes IBF/WBO/WBA champion in 2011 by beating David Haye and makes defences against:

Jean Marc Mormeck, Tony Thompson, Mariusz Wach, Fransceco Pianeta, Alexander Povetkin, Alex Leapai and Kubrat Pulev.

Now the question is from a historical perspective when do we start counting his actual defences in terms of them counting in the same way they did when there was 1 Linear World champion pre 1980's.

His total World title defences including all belts is: 22

His total from first winning the IBF title: 17

His total from first becoming unifed IBF/WBO Champion: 13

His total from becoming RING champion by beating Chagaev: 10

Hist total from beating Haye and becoming IBF/WBA/WBO Champ: 7

    Your thoughts?

he has 17 defenses in a row (without a loss), that is counted for the record.

I suppose since Vitali retired the first time. At that point there was nobody else with a reasonable claim to the championship (or to being the best out there) and Wlad could be considered the start of a new lineage.
So I don't consider him to have had 22 defences of THE title.

Thats makes 17 Defences from the time Wladimir became IBF champion in 2006 by beating Chris Byrd.

The problem with that though is that Lamon beat Wladimir for the vacant WBO belt in 2005 and was still champion until 2006. Brewster got beat by Liakhovich who got beat by Shannon Briggs who got beat by Ibragimov.

So personally i think Wlad didn't become a Real World Champion until he beat Ibragimov in 2008.

His total of defences from that point is: 13

I think wlad was the undisputed king after chagaev fight. He has fought what 8 or 9 real defences..?

    Pretty good imo.

Wlad only has a handful of title defenses. There is way in hell you could consider Wlad the lineal HW Champ until after Vitali's last retirement.

Just as Holmes' reign is generally counted 1978-1985, Wlad's reign should be counted 2006-2015. The only difference is that Ali was still a factor on Holmes' context. On the other hand, Wlad beat consensus #1 (Byrd).

However, some purists prefer to start counting Holmes from 1980 until 1985. In that case, Wlad's should be counted 2009-2015. This are the same kind of purists that claim Bernard Hopkins' reign at MW is 2001-2005.

That;s when Ring Magazine accorded him the status of heavyweight champion, yeah. That means Pulev was the 10th defence of his crown, which is indeed quite good.

Doesn't really make a difference does it.

    He's been number 1 since 2006.
In terms of lineal criteria it could be argued either iggy, chag, haye or povetkin led to a new lineage being crowned. But considering by any criteria he is the lineal champ and considering no one has ranked above him since he beat Byrd, I count from that victory.

I watched a TV show approx. 10 years ago and one of the characters was called like that. Then also because one of my favorite writer's short stories is called "the house of asterion".
