    Ken Norton was an former track athlete and ex marine and turned pro at 26 with less than 30 amateur fights. He was a main title contender in the 70's "golden era"

    Ron Lyle also had less than 30 amateur fights and turned pro at 30, he was a high level title contender in the 70s "golden era"

    and the list goes on and on...

    onesies and twosies are one thing...what i'm saying is, practically EVERY american heavyweight around today is NOT a boxer. They are rejects from other sports. Typically, boxers start at amateur at a young age and they learn the sport during their formative years, so it becomes second nature by the time they turn pro. there have always been exceptions such as nate campbell, norton and others who started late and achieved great things...but it's never been like it is today where it's more guys from other sports taking up boxing and becoming contenders than guys who grew up boxing...that's one huge indicator of how weak this sport is and how weak the comp has been at HW during this era.
