The whole PPV card and the fights we watched last night (22/11/14)

Before I go on to the main event, lets look at the other fights.

McDonnell

This was an odd one to me. Chacon looked to be on top for most of this fight and then with 2 rounds to go, quits with a shoulder injury.
He had 2 rounds left after an unexpected world title shot and may never get another opportunity but just quit? It reminded to a lesser degree of when R Burns was nearly stopped and the opponent seemed to quit.

Am I the only one who seemed surprised with how this went?

Quigg

In a tough fight, where he looked a clear winner but was made to work.
I have not really seen Quigg look as though he would be comfy fighting at long range and seems to like being up close and in the pocket. Not sure how effective that would be against a mover who is able to keep range

C Smith

Decent test for Callum and good honest win, but I just have never understood the hype that surrounds C Smith. He seems to look slow and easy to hit and I am not sure how he would fair if he was stepped up against someone with reasonable speed. Just look at where Groves and DeGale were in a similar amount of fights.
I think Fielding vs Smith could be an interesting match up for both

DeGale

Good stoppage. DeGale often looks a bit s****py and I wonder if he would advance more with a different trainer? Still DeGale got an early stoppage which I dont think many predicted and fair play. I hope he gets the opportunities before he stagnates

Groves

I am not convinced Groves looks as effective since parting with Booth, but do like Groves. I wonder how badly the Froch loss has effected him?
For the first 3 rounds, Groves seemed to be struggling but came out looking more effective from round 4 onwards before the stoppage.

Joshua

I think most guessed how this one was going to go, but fair play in producing the goods.

Cleverly/Bellew

This one really did have me confused.
Neither looked overly effective, Nathan didnt seem to be using the right hand hardly at all. Was there a problem with it?
Neither seemed to work at a massive pace, but both looked very tired especially Nathan.
Bellew seemed to be struggling to land.
I didnt think either really went for it and was shocked out how suddenly tired Nathan seemed when he only really used a jab, though admit he did alot of swaying out of harms way

Simular post to mine, you havent said much wrong there was some weird things went on last night

 

Was a bit weird. The McDonnell finish was a shock to me and I thought the DeGale fight was a quick stoppage

 

Clev v bellew was weird thought mayb clev had hurt his right hand but never mentioned anything in interviews after, ludicrous that they want a third fight tho at millennium lol it was a **** fight , bellew is the new david hate at hyping up fights

As for other fights tbh they were all sbot boring only 1 impressed me was degale but felt was early stoppage

 

I can see where you are coming from.
I enjoy watching Groves and DeGale and I thought Smith being stepped up was interesting if not overly exciting. Cant see what the hype is with Smith?
I found it frustrating watching Nathan not doing much other than jabbing and then I heard after the fight there wasnt a problem with the right hand, which made it stranger.
The Degale stoppage was a bit too quick. The ref should have at least had a look at Periban, though I felt DeGales last fight was also a very quick stoppage (how we all forget in a few months)

 

I nearly gave in and bought it last night. Luckily the mother in law came round therefore X factor had to be put on.

By the sound of it it was the lesser of two evils.

 

You should have let your mother inlaw have her boxing on instead of being so selfish and putting the Xfactor on for yourself :nono

 

Im surprised nobody has said much about the McDonnell fight

Fair play, sounds a good night after all

 

The whole card was matched badly and apart from clev / bellew we knew what the results were going to be before the night happened. None of the undercard fights were any good because the matchmaking was so poor.

The only 2 things that really surprised me was the McDonnell fight and Cleverly's performance.

McDonnell was on his way to losing that fight until his opponent pulled out with a magical non existent shoulder injury. I suspect some money changed hands to create that injury and retirement. Cleverly clearly has a hand or wrist injury that he damaged in the first round or had before the fight started. He was one handed nearly all night.

 

AJ never watched the main event and he knew

 

With the Mcdonnell fight, the end of the round before the fight was stopped Chacon did move his shoulder when walking back to his corner, looking like he was saying then it had gone, remember seeing it on the replay so I don't think he just quit out of the blue.

 

Arguably the worst PPV ever. I only watched because it was on in the pub.

Cleverly should just retire, he clearly isn't bothered anymore. Bellew should fight once more (Huck or the Hernandez/Afolabi winner) just so we can laugh at his gobbing off and tough talk only to get on his bike, barely throw a punch and then get brutally KO'd by which ever one he fights, then he should do us all a favor and retire.

How can either of these fighters have any fans after last nights abysmal showing?

 

Good points, bailey. I just don't think Quigg stands a chance vs Frampton, i mean the japanese he fought wasn't exactly world class. Carl Frampton might be the must gifted boxer in UK & Ireland right now. DeGale & Groves would improve much better if they got new trainers. Groves needs Booth back and i would love to see DeGale train with Mccracken or Roach. However DeGale did look good, where as Groves looked poor in the beginning and yeah you wonder how much the Froch wars damaged him.

Bellew-Cleverly: Bellew might win World title at Cruiser, but that is more down to how bad the division is, than anything else. Both gets annihilated when they step up in class.

Didn't watch Callum Smith unfortunately, but i hear some pretty good things about him.
