hey guys quick question i perferated my eardrum sparring about 7 weeks ago it felt good after 4 weeks i started sparring with good headgear then boxed on the 6th week in wales, maybe should have waited longer but luckily didnt take any big shots to my ear, meant to be boxing again in 2 weeks time but i dont wanna risk damaging it again as its still pretty soon.. im still getting a slight ache there which tells me its not fully healed but it feels 99% healed as my hearing is perfect again, my question is can i box with cotton wool in my ear as i have been sparring and its just a bit of extra protection for the ear? any help appreciated

I'd wait until your ear is fully healed mate. ;-)

Never had my eardrum perforated, but used to constantly get hit there and lose some hearing in that ear for days. You can only have that happen so many times before it becomes permanent.

Why head gear is sold without ear protection is inconcievable. A simple strap or bar across the ear opening changes everything. New head gear with proper protection and this becomes a non-issue, trust me it's worth the investment. You can't risk permanent damage.

Now can you clarify? Are you asking if you can compete with cotton in your ear, or simply if this will prevent further damage?

Either way, i am not 100% sure, but I highly doubt it will help. The cotton ball has to be big enough to ensure your opponent/sparring partner's glove will never fully cover your ear hole. And if you manage to do that, good luck getting it to stay.

So either way, I don`t think there`s any way around it. Get a new head gear, the one you`re using is worthless.

thanks for the comment i understand exactly what your saying why on some they have a small leather strap and some they dont is beyond me if its that important which i beleive it is! but i have one of the pointed nylon bar reyes headgear which is meant to be one of the best you can buy. im gonna see if i can get some kind of strap stitched in there surely you would think with the one of the top brands in head gear they would already do that..

yes i did mean compete, I mean its okay now as i boxed 2 weeks ago with it but it would be nice to just have a little bit of extra confort in my head that its not gonna go again until ive got a couple bouts out of the way, i just assumed it would help as ive been using the cotton wool in my ear a couple of weeks now as i was suggested and it just feels like im doing the right thing protecting it from loud noises on the bags or sparring etc
