Then it's a good job you're opinion is worthless. Allow me to educate you. It is not by accident that very small minded, insular American boxing writers, trainers, ex pro's and other recognised " experts " rate Duran as highly as they do. It is because he " deserves " it.
he lad a long career. long careers wear fighters out and like anyone, had his ups N downs. We know he can be psyched out but he can't be overrated. He is merely human! remember that he beat Leonard and I dont care what anyone says, Leonard was outstanding! He also went 15 with Marvin and at age 37 won his 4th title in a tough fight because of this, Roberto actually exceeded expectations you're welcome
One thing I found interesting in my travels is the number of rounds Duran fought. He fought 821 rounds. To put that in perspective fights such as Hopkins fought 506. Hearns fought 380, Mayweather 363, W Klitschko 334, Ali 548. You have to pretty much go back to the 50's to find a fighter who fought more. That said SRR fought 1400 rounds.
He'll yes it's possible, and I may be guilty of it my damn self. I'm not comfortable ranking that guy who quit in a major championship bout and who looked like the Michelin Man in so many of his bouts, at #5. But then you look at how he ruled a division for nearly a decade and his five-decade career span and that win over Leonard (who's great) and that 15 rounds with Hagler and that win over Barkley, a top-rated MW at his peak (never mind his faux belt please. Seriously.) and what are we gonna do? Pretend he wasn't what he was? But-- he ain't the greatest LW of all time. Benny Leonard was. And there is no way he is over the handful of fighters that most here could easily name.
The funny part is if he would have been more focused in the later part of his career god only knows where he would have been rated. Though I would have disagreed with the decision, he came within two rounds of beating Hagler, just think where he'd be rated if he would have pulled that off.
Punching power overrated, boxing skill underrated. His KO's, when they happened, took all night long. Only quick KO's were against "opponent" type of fighters. His boxing IQ however was off the charts.
Depends on what you mean by "quick" Ko's. He had an ex Welterweight champ who was a KO artist himself named Pipino Cuevas reeling around from the second round until the fight ended in the fourth.
I agree a tad with this. Duran had some Brutal KO's from bantam to light but most of his top level opponents at lightweight lasted late. Duran had a lot of strength behined his punches rather as sheer ko power. His body shots were brutal. His Boxing skill is some of he best you'll ever see in terms of complete skill set. His IQ is even lauded by Roger and Mayweather Sr and they give no one compliments. Roger is on video saying he doesn't know if his Floyd Jr could beat Duran because Duran could also adjust and is one of the best boxers ever, period. Foyd Sr said he was a slick bad ass mofo and he was his fav fighter in those day's.
I think you've hit on some good points there. In my initial post, I hit upon a couple of those later efforts (Moore, Barkley), but was really more focused (at least in my mind) on the lightweight Duran. Great fighter without question, but because of his image as a barely-contained caveman, he is the one imprinted in our minds as the end-all Superfighter.
The Leonard win was great win for a guy who had started at Bantam, and ruled the Lightweight division for almost a decade prior to moving up to Welter. Despite your beliefs I'll take the word of paid boxing writers, trainers, and ex fighters much more seriously than I will any self proclaimed internet genius.
What happened to the lauded IQ in the 2nd fight against Leonard and in the title fight against Wilfred Benitez, then?
