Not so fast, how is it in terms of participation instead of viewership? That's where it really grows or dies.
It doesn't have the same buzz it did a few years ago. As an earlier poster said its over saturated. One massive show every 6 months would do. All these tv shows are utter crap.
The participation rate is going to depend on how much the average MMA fighter gets paid. Unless it's above 100K a year I don't see how anyone can make a living at it given the number of injuries one can get, and if you have to pay 3-4 different trainers to be a well rounded fighter than even 100K isn't going to be enough. Hell my 16 year daughter has been playing tennis her whole life and Patrick McEnroe said that when a player is deciding whether to go pro or accept a university scholarship you need to factor in that if you go pro it costs about 138K a year in travelling & coach expense before you break-even. I can't see MMA being any cheaper.
Yup. It was clear that they could only milk the kids who had grown up on WWE for so long. Once they grew up and realized that this **** was just dull and childish, they realized that the Sweet Science is where it is at when it comes to fighting. You can only dress up this boring roll-around-on-the-ground **** for so long with macho marketing before the adolescents you are targeting mature and go elsewhere for REAL entertainment - boxing. :nod Boxing will be around long after this garbage is a forgotten memory.:deal
I've been seeing more and more MMA guys switching over to boxing and the reason they're telling me that they're switching over is that a lot can go wrong in the MMA.
Some colleges provide scholarships for wrestling, MMA is one of the only avenues for professional advancement from there (and the only one that involves legitimate competition). I can see the best competitors there continuing to go MMA in large enough numbers to provide a decent talent pool alone. MMA can also draw from lots of other combat sports, which by and large provide less professional pay than it can provide.
Another problem is favortism. Guys like FW Conor McGregor are being undeservedly pushed for title shots when far more deserving but less marketable fighters like a Dennis Bermudez get put on the backburner.
