Why are modern hw's so flat footed and stiff?

I was watching Buster Douglas Tony Tucker fight yesterday and was just so impressed by their movement, handspeed and footwork compared to the likes of todays hw's Anthony Joshua, Wlad, Pulev and Joseph Parker who i've just watched fight in recent weeks.

Is this due to the weight and extra muscle hw's now day carry or just poor technical ability? Even 80s b-level hw's like Mitch Green and Pinklon Thomas seem to move with so much grace compared to Wilder, Jennings, Povetkin...

You weren't even slightly impressed with Joe Parker today? Come on man. Assuming this is a troll but whatever.

Nothing much to say about Parker, YET. He could certainly turn into a very good HW but we will see. As of now he is just a prospect.

Anyway, hes right.. HWs back then were on a different plateau skill level wise and movement wise. Seemed like they could be very fleet footed and skillful as well as having power.

Thomas-Witherspoon is another good fight from the 90s that shows this. A very good technical fight.

Wlad has incredible footwork some of the best you will ever see, its not easy maintaining perfect distance for a whole fight, his handspeed is also very impressive so he doesn't count

Joshua has just recently turned pro and hasn't had a chance to show his footwork as he has just been walking people downa nd finishing them, he seems pretty fast though

Pulev has subtle footwork and average handspeed but they were never his strengths

saw parkers last fight decent footwork and is lightening quick, he doesn't apply

wilder has terrible footwork but good hand speed although he does teligraph his punches

jennings is average in both departments

Povetkin has great footwork and decent power

you have to understand that eastern europeans move different to american fights, american fighters with good footwork tend to dance and move a whole lot, eastern europeans are a lot more functional and attacking with there footwork eg Lomochenko has easily the best footwork in boxing, he could win fights on that attribute alone

you also have to fact in that these guys as smaller back then

Good post. There are plenty of heavies with good footwork today, and plenty of bad ones as well. Dancing around the ring obnoxiously doesn't really impress me either, and doesn't necessarily qualify as good footwork either.

Wlad has way better footwork than Haye as was evident in their fight. Just the better athlete.
