Tyson was routinely inactive in clinches throughout his career. When did Tyson ever push back or punch his way out of a clinch? I honestly can't remember anymore than a few instances of him ever doing that. Contrary to popular belief, Tyson was not a particularly good inside fighter.

Holy did a lot more than just clinch.

He butted something fierce and threw his elbows into Mikes head and neck non stop.

It was a horrible performance from Holyfield. He won the street fight but he couldn't win a clean boxing match and knew it.

Pure utter bull**** yet again, Tinkerbell Tyson went in with the head and came off second best just like he did in the exchanges. The man was outfight by a blown up Cruiserweight and the superior boxer.

^ This bit is just the kind of hype that makes him one of the most overrated fighters ever.

Tyson had a very good body attack with Rooney and was a great combo puncher had a good jab and good head movement.

Tyson was inactive in the clinch a lot but with Rooney it was less plus Kevin would make tyson punch out yelling it from the corner.

Watch the Holmes fight Tyson says Larry id holding in the Clinch Rooney loses it in the corner and Tells Tyson to go and start punching out of the clinch and start putting punches together.

next round tyson punch out put went up he didnt stop Holmes but is was the beginning of the end for Holmes.

I think he had great heart and a great chin. The problem is that if despite having these attributes you're still less talented than your opponent, you're going to take a beating. And if you didn't have a great chin, you wouldn't take a beating, you'd just get knocked out. And if you didn't have heart you wouldn't take a beating, you'd just stay on your stool and not come out for a round. So the fact Tyson took beatings, particularly against Douglas, tells me he had a lot of heart, but on that particular night, he didn't have the skills Douglas had.

Aside from the fact that his physical dimensions put him at a disadvantage against taller, longer fighters, Tyson's biggest weakness was his lack of an inside game. You can see it in the Spinks fight, for example, since people are talking about that. The second time Spinks tries to tie him up, it's not a strong clinch. Ask yourself, why is Tyson not hitting him in that position, why is he not fighting in the clinch? Instead, he just waits like he wants the ref to separate them. It's a fundamental flaw in his training. Tyson relied too much on explosive punching to get rid of opponents quickly, by KO. He needed a way to grind down or outpoint bigger, taller opponents when a quick KO wasn't happening. That's where an inside game would come in. When people talk up Rooney and Cus as these great trainers, I'm not buying it. These people didn't really understand boxing, or rather they only understood part of it. Otherwise, they would have taught their guy to fight inside, to not let himself be tied up so easily.

i disagree, unlike marciano(5'9") and like qawi(5'6") and orlin norris(5'10") a heavyweight also, tyson did not take damage coming in.he used a good jab and head movement.he only took punishment at the end when he lost the jab and head movement,as well as punching in combination.

as far as holyfield is concerned,6'2" is not short,he was not as elusive as tyson.he had as much trouble with short fighters,moorer(6'1"),cooper(5'11") and mercer(6'1") as with the taller ones.

i agree, inside fighting is the bread and butter for a short and short armed fighter.

False. Tyson would occasionally punch in clinches. Most of the time, however, including in his prime, he would just fall asleep when someone tried to tie him up.

---well,disprove the statement, don't just call it hype.you cannot,EVERYONE SAID HE HAD THE SPEED OF A MIDDLEWEIGHT,HE WAS BUSY TILL THE END(STAMINA) AND OF COURSE,ONLY A ,MORON WOULD SAY HE COULD NOT PUNCH!

i wouldn't say a man weighing 220 lb and was stronger than mike that night(with a great chin) a blown up cruiser.
