Naturally, their styles are different. Frazier is the quintessential pressure fighter, where Norton LOOKS more powerful but fights with a much more reluctant style. Norton has power but he never really used it to it's fullest potential. He always fought as if he worried about retaliation. Frazier fought as if he never cared for his own safety with some exceptions. There lies the difference between Frazier and Norton. Neither man can take a man out with just one punch. But, while Norton fights a calculated chess match, Frazier has only one gear, forward. Norton would not hurt Frazier with his power for two reasons. Reason one, if Frazier can get up SIX TIMES, against Foreman, it's not likely that he's even going down at all, against Norton. Reason two, Norton would not take the necessary chances to put Frazier down. He's too concerned with retaliation. Norton's concerns will be answered in the middle rounds. He would not meet Frazier at ring center, although it would appear that he might have the upper hand. Once Frazier survives Norton's first solid shots --and, again, he certainly will survive them-- he will then press forward with no regard for his safety or for retaliation. Once Norton realizes he will not stop Frazier, he fights in retreat mode, the worst thing you could ever do against Frazier. Once this happens, Joe will make SURE your back finds the ropes, then a corner, then he will plant you there........for the duration. Norton wins rounds 1 and 2. Frazier establishes a measure of dominance in round 3. Norton does have heart but he's just too cautious. He wins round 4, but, by round's end, Smokin Joe is fully reved up. It's just a matter of time, once Norton's back finds those ropes. Frazier by KO in 8
The shots that Ali hit and hurt Frazier with didn't seem to phase Norton. If they meet post 1973, I think Norton wins. Why? Frazier had trouble with bigger boxers. He was down on points vs an over weight Buster Mathis midway through the fight until Mathis slowed down and Frazier took over. Norton was far better than Mathis. In another fight vs a big man, Frazier had a tame Bugner in there, who in fact buckled Joe's knees with the first solid punch he landed. I think it was round 11. Bonevena was also pretty big and he nearly KO'd Frazier. Norton wasn't a smallish heavy without power. Frazier feasted upon those types. One day Norton might get credit for body shots.
What would this have to do with a Norton-Frazier fight? Would Ali be in there helping Frazier or Norton? The real question is whether Norton could handle Frazier's firepower, Norton was chinny, something you didnt want to be going in against Frazier.
Joe backs him up and Kenny cannot fight backing up at all. the other big issue is that defense of norton is wide open for a left hook. Wrong guy to be leaving a big window like that to. Norton won't go 5. once hurt, he can't get away or kill time against this guy.
Norton did not like being in a serious brawl. Journeymen like Scott Ledoux demonstrated that, as well as top notch fighters like Shavers, Foreman and ****ey. Frazier would destroy Norton inside of three rounds.
When a fight happens often determines the winner. Frazier only had one dangerous punch. He didn't jab. He seldom used an uppercut ( which would suit his style ) and his right hand was average at best. Norton didn't duck punchers. Outside of Foreman Frazier didn't meet any punchers unless you consider Bonevena a puncher and he floored Frazier twice and nearly ko'd him. IMO Norton hit harder than Bonevena and was faster with more skills. So the question can Frazier get past Nortons jab and take his punches is also valid. Frazier was chinny too and we can see the vs tier two opponents / average punchers when they landed. Quarry had some similarity to Frazier and Norton owned him. Norton was also better vs Ali and IMO might have stopped him had their first fight been 15 rounds.
The problem with this logic is that of the 3 of the 4 examples you use happened when Norton was past his sell by date and the other was against one of the biggest bangers in history, who also wiped out Frazier (admittedly post prime Frazier). I think Frazier wins this fight but I think Norton is being somewhat undersold on this thread, there are some lazy clichés being regurgitated imo.
Chinny? Steve, I respect you massively and acknowledge that your historical knowledge of boxing is far greater than mine, but I think that describing Norton as chinny is harsh. Somebody like Charlie Magri could be described as chinny, but not Norton in my view. I bet Larry Holmes and Ali don't think Norton was chinny. Norton's Garcia loss does not admittedly look good but in Foreman, Shavers & ****ey he lost to guys who could knock out or stop almost anybody, the latter when clearly past his prime.
He didn't floor frazier twice. If you've watched the fight. ( which I doubt you have) you'd see the second knockdown was a push.
