Even if they had rematched 12 months later, how long do you think it would of been before Lewis opened up those old cuts again?

I don't care what medical attention Vitali received after those facial injuries, they would be a major weakness in another tear up with someone of Lewis's firepower.

The facts are Vitali was winning the fight and if it wasn't for his skin would have probably won the fight, the fans know a rematch should have been taken by Lewis.

 

Well okay, he had pants on. Its not like he was stripped. In the ring, he did not look fat. You could see his ribs and his stomach did not fall over his belt line.

 

This is correct. Lewis was also cut and his eyes were actually the more swollen of the two.

That's my take on it too, if for no other reason than that's his best option.

 

Back to Wlad, I think on a good night, he could potentially beat just about anyone, but he could also lose to a lot of these guys too. I don't think he beats Lewis, Foreman (younger version), or hist big brother Vitali, ever. Tyson could beat him, but he might be small enough Wlad could tie him up, would be very interesting to see. Holyfield at his best would be interesting too. I think he could give Ali and Holmes problems because they don't have the bombs to threaten his chin, however, they are better boxers (more fluid, etc) and could also beat him. Bowe would be interesting. I don't know enough about the old time heavyweights to make an intelligent point about it, but I think just given the size disparity you would have to at least give him a chance.

 

Why should Lewis have taken a rematch?

Its not like he sat on the title for three years.

His retiring should have made things easier for Vitally, not harder.

Lewis basically gave Vitally the title on a plate, and then Vitally dropped the ball!

Good point, I think some people forget who actually won the fight. And had Lewis gone on and fought other opponents then perhaps I would be sympathetic to the "ducking a rematch" point of view, but the fact is the man retired. It was his right to do so.

That said, it would have been helpful if he hadn't taken as long as he did to make this decision but by all accounts, including Vitali's, his mom played a big role in this.

 

I don't think anyone has benefited more from the deterioration of the heavyweight division than Wlad. He would have been ko'd by a lot of the champions of the past. A Weak chin and tendency to bleed is a bad combo in any era. He could methodically outwork guys like Page, Weaver. He'd possibly be too big for Frazier. I think Tyson, Lewis, Foreman, his bro. Vitali would all ko him. Ali and Holmes would decision him. He could beat Rachmann and Ruiz. Bowe would ko him. He could possibly outbox Holyfield.
