Why do you think he was so reluctant to engage? His lack of "heart" came from the very real understanding that if he did, his glass jaw would get shattered.

If you're looking for a serious debate I don't think it was his heart so much as his mind. He always seemed to get into the ring perfectly fine but as soon as the first punch landed something inside made him think "This hurts..." and he crumpled.
