Cotto's career has been a mirage for almost 5 years

Cotto has no legitimacy and is hanging on by his name these days. He has one win over a quality opponent since Margarito beat him and none post-Pacquiao:

7(6)-4(2) in his last 11.
-1 solid win (2009 Clottey SD)
-1 win over a shot fighter (Mayorga TKO)
-2 wins over nobodies (Jennings and Rodriguez TKO)
-3 stoppage wins over shot fighters via old injuries (Foreman knee, Margarito eye, Martinez knee)
-2 severe beatings (Margarito 11 rounds, Pac 12 rounds)
-2 clear losses (Mayweather, Trout UD)

Alvarez on the other hand not only outsold him by 1million buys against Floyd, he has a much larger national following and only has a loss to Floyd (and while he was dominated he was never close to being stopped).

In terms of form over the past 7 years, PPV sales, and total $$ brought to the table, Alvarez is the clear A-side. In terms of overall resume, it's Cotto. But for all intents and purposes Cotto's career has been over for nearly 5 years.

At no point did I say that. Nor do I even think it. Cotto was a good fighter with a quality resume. But all the quality is pre-2008.

Cotto was beaten into what should have been retirement TWICE since then, but because he's a stoic dude with a lot of fans they keep bringing him out to fight people that he can beat or just make a lot of money against. I don't mind that at all because he's earned the right to make some money, but he is in no way a top fighter anymore and the resume proves it.

 

I agree with all of that. Alvarez was brought up easy against midgets. This is a known fact. HOWEVER...

He did better against Mayweather than Cotto.

He sold better against Mayweather than Cotto.

He bounced back with wins over the top 2 guys in his division (Trout and Lara).

Cotto bounced back with a loss to Trout and wins over a crippled Martinez and f*cking Delvin Rodriguez.

In the past 5 years, Alvarez is head and shoulders above Cotto in every aspect.

 

Cotto did MUCH better against Mayweather then Canelo. Canelo was damn near shut-out, I dont wanna hear about that laughable draw scorecard. Other then that, yes Cotto has skated by on name power mostly.

 

True. I'm going by the fact that Cotto was ready to go in the last 2 rounds whereas Alvarez was outclassed but never really hurt. Cotto did win rounds, Alvarez didn't truly win any iirc.

Even though I agree 100% with what you said about Cotto, he was never #1 in any weight class he has fought in, and has been over-inflated in rankings, I do not agree about Alvarez as the A side. He has 3 losses, 2 were gifts (Trout and Lara).

Despite that, they are still both A skilled opponents, bring tons of world class fighting experience, particularly Cotto and are gonna make a great match. Even though Alvarez clearly has youth and size on his side, Cotto has tons of experience, even from his losses. His losses were from A + opponents, so there is no way I can knock on him or count him out in this fight.

 

I don't really get this too much... There is a lot of argument that minimizes what the OP stresses.

-Sergio win capturing the 160 crown is one of his best individual wins.
-2 of the 4 divisions he won titles in were post 2008/9 including the only titles that weren't filling a vacancy.
-Delvin and Yuri wins are on par with several of his defenses at 140/147.
-He lost to the best fighters he faced (Pacquiao, Mayweather), no surprise there.
-Still has managed to become the #1 ranked 154 back in 2011/2012 and also lineal and #1/2 at 160.

Obviously his 140 stay was his best but what he's done above 147 is much more impressive than most would have thought.

 

Martinez' knees were evaluated to be fine after the fight. Get over it. It was a legit win.
