Its the same here in Ireland.
"We" - as in ordinary decent people fell asleep on the job of looking after our society and allowed a whle plethora of racketeering quangos to take over our society and our democracy.

The "Crime industry" is a billion-dollar business these days.

Lawyers - cha-ching $$$
Social workers - cha-ching $$$$
prison officers -cha-ching etc etc

Dealing with criminals properly and protecting the public is bad for business.
