I understand that. Jones wanted a level of control and that hurt his paydays as well as the marketing of fights/opponents. I don't remember, or maybe I never knew - but why was his rematch with Griffin on a Thursday? A prime Jones would have been be a social media superstar.
That'll be the same Omar Sheika that Jones finally got around to 9 years later will it? Immediately followed by ( ta da ) the highly over rated Jeff Lacy. The same Lacy that was billed as the indistuctable mini Tyson, until Calzaghe embarrassed the fool. Got it.
You mean Omar Sheika and Jeff Lacy that were complete and utter nobodies then and now in the United States sports scene? Is that what you are jabbering about? Why offer an opinion on the US when you regularly demonstrate you don't have a clue about the environment? Jeff Lacy had the name recognition of a soccer player - and no one over here knows any of them either.
ugggh..I didn't finish reading this post. Again, you just sound like a sore fan boy, the Calzaghe stuff isn't even remotely close to what I'm talking about.
I mean top 10 ranked fighters in each division, that time being early 2003. Hopkins was #1 at middleweight, at 175 you would have had Gonzalez, Griffin, Harding etc ranked in top 10.
zadfrak, You make it sound as though he didn't deteriorate quickly because he didn't fight anyone. He absorbed little punishment, because he was a GREAT fighter. What are you talking about? Oh look, another objective poster. You and Mongoose are one and the same. Has it ever entered your head, that Roy was 35 when he lost to Tarver, and he'd fought 50 times, across 5 divisions, and he had to lose muscle quickly, after returning from HW? He didn't just fight C graders did he? Don't be ridiculous. Funny how they got made? They were MANDATORIES! Of course they were easier to make than the bigger fights. Roy did miss a lot of fights, just like every other fighter. But you can have links to the following: Where Liles turned him down. Where King wanted options for Benn. Where HBO tried to bring Dariusz to the U.S. Where Hopkins wanted an equal split. Where his father held him back when he was younger at MW. Where Eubank said it would have been suicide to fight him while prime. Where Calzaghe said he'd have wanted 'The Crown Jewels' because of the element of risk. All of the above can be backed up. You need to educate yourself on the matter. Because like Mongoose, you are clearly implying that all Roy wanted to do, was to fight second rate guys. That's not true in the slightest. He'd have deteriorated at 30-32? If he'd have fought who exactly?
Hardly surprising that you've agreed with him. Most of his post was BS. They were no excellent points. How would any modern fighter stand up to the gruelling schedule that a fighter like Lloyd had to endure? Ray Robinson had over 200 fights, as did many other fighters from that period.
That's true. However, Floyd is fighting in a different era, with more exposure, and his PPV numbers are only great, if his opponent is a big name. He was involved in one half of the biggest PPV of all time, because he was the P4P no.1 fighter, and he was fighting Oscar. Take away Oscar, Cotto and Canelo who all have huge fan bases, and his PPV sales aren't all that. Showtime can't have been happy with his last few fights. Also, there's many boxing fans who despise him, that no doubt buy the PPV, in the hope of seeing him get beat, which I'm sure Floyd loves. With regards to Roy, HBO at times weren't happy with who he was fighting. But he fought on HBO over 25 times. He also fought a lot of guys who they were happy with.
Then why did your so called superhero Jones fight them then? You muppet. Yanks!! They can't be beaten for utter stupidity.
Loudon, More on the November 22 date, Hopkins expected but then turned down the chance at a rematch. nydailynews.com/archives/sports/brannon-making-shot-jones-article-1.736006 boxing-monthly.co.uk/content/9811/two.htm Edit - Sorry can't post the links properly yet.
Of course he was a top 5 HW. That didn't mean he was great. But he was a top 5 HW. He was the WBA champ and he'd had some decent wins.
