A little tale about boxing management and a fighter that hasn't been elected yet into the HOF but was touted to be the next great PPV star at the time Donald Curry.Mid 80's fighter to the younger fans he was it seemed the real deal at 147 lb,between 1983-86.

He was managed by Dave Gorman who was on allegedly 28% of Curry's earnings.Curry removed Gorman from the scene and employed Akhbar Muhammad as his contract was ending with Gorman, his choice just before the Honeyghan fight. The expiration of contract days after the Honeyghan fight.Curry would it seem be about to start earning those seven figure paydays.Being from the U.K and boxing fans worldwide would tell you that night Honeyghan destroyed Curry in a massive, massive upset.

Gorman sacked but then re-employed for the Honeyghan fight to work with Curry, only in boxing!Curry was a guy that regularly dropped a lot of weight before fights, crashing weight it caught up with him big time that night. The heir apparent in his own eyes and many others to Sugar Ray Leonard.

He never recovered from that night. The projected $3-5m plus dollar fights gone. His aura gone also. The argument being on reflection he had stayed at 147 lb too long. The facts were too many people including the fighter had made the cardinal sin of overlooking the task ahead.Blame no-one but yourself in these circumstances.

His last fight was against Emmett Linton at 154 lb.Curry and Linton had fallen out,Curry had managed Linton in the 90's.Linton not happy with the direction of his career.Linton beat Curry up over 7 rounds and won by TKO.The purses $50k Linton,$30k Curry.

Curry took that last fight as he needed the money, could of been so different. He had earned $5m in career earnings which he couldn't hold onto.He should of earned a lot more.

He has been since quoted as blaming the bad management of Akbar Muhammad in various articles. .http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/1997/apr/08/curry-comeback-goes-beyond-ring/

Dont want to take conversation to different tangent..but i have a question to anyone with experience in boxing business...when a fighter gets to be champion..does he have the choice who to give an opportunity to....or does he have to fight -always- the #1 contender comming up?.

they have a choice unless they have a mandatory due or the ex champion had a rematch clause in his contract

The cornermen by Ron Fried, I believe. Look the boxing biz is like any other business, like they say "Let the buyer beware", know your rights and you will do alright. The cornermen, deals with the talent side of the business, without the talent there is no business

People have asked me why don't I take any of my guys to Al Haymon? Well an article by Steve Kim entitled 'Working with Haymon', explains it all, google it. Talk about slave contracts, dang everything favors "Big Al", he owns you.
