Who else would have KO'd Holmes the way Tyson did?

Holmes knew a potential fight with Tyson had been in the works since 1986, but Tyson would've been nixed from the HBO Heavyweight Tournament if he went ahead and fought Larry. Instead Cayton and Jacobs kept Holmes on a short leash and promised him a shot if Tyson won the belts. Larry always knew a fight with Mike was in the works.

 

Your point is what ? Holmes was not in a state of constant or even part time training post Spinks in the hope of a Tyson fight .. it was a fast decision after significant inactivity against a brutal opponent that was a major stylistic risk for him even at his best .. that being said I think a prime Holmes beats a prime Tyson ... too good and too mentally tough ...

 

I think my point was rather obvious. Do I need to repeat it? Holmes was waiting for a fight with Tyson. He was ready. Cool now?

He had no intention of fighting again. Don King showed up one night telling himyou have someone he could beat.when Holmes asked who it was and Don King said it was Tyson, Homes said I can't beatTyson. King responded that he would pay him 3.5 million and Holmes responded, where's Tyson?

You're going off what Holmes said. I don't see someone like Holmes, whose chapass wants to go down in history as the greatest heavyweight of all time, signing to fight someone like Tyson on short notice or for money. No, he wanted his name in the history books. The man was a proud champion and extremely prideful. A fight with Tyson was on the horizon since '86.

You're thinking of the Holmes who came back in '91. No he wasn't peak or even prime when he fought Tyson but he wasn't any better when he fought Mercer, Holyfield or McCall. THAT guy was fat and old! I just don't believe he took the Tyson fight for a quick payday. How better could he have been for fighting Tim Anderson types?

He was better a few years later, but anyway though i think peak Tyson wins, no way a past peak Holmes wins.

 

Well that dream was shattered when he was beat twice by Spinks, Marciano was still the man with the perfect record. Holmes came back for the money pure and simple.
