Would Tommy Hearns have the power at middleweight to get GGG out of there before GGG lands a power shot and destroys him? GGG may have a good chin but so did Duran until Tommy cracked him, he has never been in with anybody who can hit as fast and as hard as Tommy.
cant see the unproven golovkin having too much chance against hearns who was a rare combination of master boxer and all time great puhcher. at middle hearns kayoed james schuler, moved up to light heavy to kayo andries then came back to middle to kayo juan Roldan and was on the brink of kayoing barkley when he took his eye off the ball. Nothing wrong with his power. If golovkin could draw hearns into a brawl hed have his best chance but most people who brawled with hearns got kayoed fast. Golovkins no mug but I think hed have a bad night against the all time great hearns.
Underrate GGG at your own peril! True, he hasn't fought the caliber of fighters that Tommy Hearns has, through NO FAULT of his own...Tommy Hearns is one of my alltime favorite welterweights no doubt, who was a devastating right hand puncher for sure, but could Tommy absorb the devastating punches to the slats that Gennady Golovkin unleashes and survive ? I pass on the outcome... P.S. I still insist that in GGG we might have on our hands an alltime great banger in the MW division...
Want to see more of Golovkin, but as of right now I see no reason why he can't do what Barkley did and Roldan and Kinchen nearly did. I think Golovkin is clearly superior to all these three.
by that logic I see no reason why pinklon thomas couldn't have done to ali what leon spinks did to him, and tommy morrisson could've done what earnie shavers nearly did. Doesn't work does it? Hearns was widely considered shot vs Roldan and kinchen, and the kinchen fight was at super middle. On a related note what on gods green earth was kinchen using for a chin?
So you're comparing a 36 year old Ali that hadn't convincingly beat a world class opponent for nearly three years with a not yet 30 year old Hearns that would stay at the top for several more years and had his arguably best win ahead of him? I don't believe for a second that Hearns was shot in the 80's. He still looked as sharp as ever, the difference was that the bigger opponents could come inside and hurt him in a way the smaller guys couldn't. Leonard had already shown that he was vulnerable when you managed to get inside his reach. No surprise that strong MWs with good chins would take advantage of this. Yes, the Kinchen fight was at SMW, but Kinchen was a MW for most of his career and since this was with the same day weigh-in they were probably roughly around what Hearns and Golovkin would be at MW with the day before weigh-in.
I agree with what you said, but will hint on the outcome. Tommy was a welter that didn't take the best punch in the world. GGG is a natural middle that rates as an all time puncher at 160 pounds.
And p, by YOUR logic when I and OTHERS saw young Ray Robinson fight as a young welterweight early in his career we immediately touted him as an alltime GREAT despite his relatively few fights. So p, by your LOGIC were we all wrong ? I am not comparing GGG with the greatest fighter I ever saw SRR, but in GGG we have a tremendous wrecking machine banger who just might be in the pantheon of the best middleweights since the days of a chap named Harry Greb and Ray Robinson. Have FAITH...
It wouldn't take a rocket scientist to spot potential greatness in a young ray robinson. Nothing wrong with golovkin, you ask me if I think hed beat hearns? I tell you I think hed lose. theres no shame in it, ray robinson himself would have his hands full with hearns.
His legs and chin had gone at this point this was crystal clear. Hearns stood in there trading bombs with prime hagler for 3 rounds without blinking. Kinchen was hurting him with half shots
Hearns wasn't as shot as people thought in that fight. He was battering Kinchen with powershots all night but IIRC, it was revealed afterwards that Kinchen had taken some kind of painkilling drugs that numbed the feeling of the punches that Hearns landed. Kinchen still had his face busted up even though he he couldn't feel the full impact of the punches.
too early to tell with GGG but he certainly has the potential to be as great as he looks when he can get the other guys to fight him and that is the measuring stick we need. If he takes out Cotto,Kid Chocolate,Chavez Jr, etc. I may be leaning towards him Big, right now Hearns has the resume
