On accomplishments, yes he is.

He was a great fighter.

But he did have 33 fights at the weight, and spent the majority of his career at the weight.

So it's to be expected.


But I think a 25 year old Roy Jones was the best guy to ever fight at the weight class.

 

Joe is rightfully the greatest SMW based on accomplishments.


With regards to Roy, what do you mean all he did was beat Toney?

Roy's wins against Toney and Malinga were very good wins.

Roy only had a handful of fights at the weight, due to circumstances.

He offered to fight Liles, and the fight was turned down.

The Benn fight was also hard to make.

Steve Collins only held the lightly regarded WBO belt.


Roy fought Mike McCallum in his first fight at LHW, which paved the way for other fights at the weight, against the likes of Hill.

Soon after Roy moved up, Collins retired, and Benn had already declined and had been beaten by Malinga and Collins.

Eubank had also left the division, apart from having a final fight there against Calzaghe in 97.


No, Roy didn't chose to reign in a weaker division.

The LHW division in the late 90's/early 00's, was much stronger than the SMW division.

Sorry but there isn't enough of a sample size for Jones. Too few fights and against mediocre competition other than Toney. Jones was reluctant to face the best in EVERY single weightclass he fought in.

 

As I said, Joe is the number 1 based on accomplishments.

You can't list Roy, because he only had an handful of fights at the weight.

But he had good wins over Toney, Malinga and Lucas.

But you can say that Roy was the best fighter to ever fight at the weight.

Maybe but all ward has to do is beat degale or andre dirrell & he leaps far ahead of Roy & joe. You can give it to joe by default but you can easily make a argument for ward, jones & even froch. Lacy won in the 8th, it wasnt like it was a hard fought 12 round fight.
Lacy doesnt look as much of a hype job when you see that he beat world rated Vanderpool, world rated Pemberton, Sheika who went on to challenge again, world rated Reid. Thats better than some of the top 5 today.
The Tsypko fight was where Lacy damaged his shoulder. I dont think it was a gift decision, but a hard fought fight where Lacy did more work, also when they first fought, when Lacy was in full health, he was looking very dominant before the premature ending.
I know Calzaghe vacated the IBF title, he had defended it against Bika, but Manfredo was more known to the American public (to gain interest in a Hopkins bout) than Stieglitz, who i would add was blown away in 3 rounds, and he then fought Kessler who was the next highest rated SMW, so I dont think what you say holds a great deal there.
