Fair enough; I'm actually kind of amazed at the amount of love he gets here. Never understood it myself, but there's more to heaven and earth than exist in my imagination, so the writer said........

Why? He was inconsistent, but at his very best he was terrifically skilled for such a big guy. HW doesn't get better than Holy-Bowe I imo.

Because all this love is based on one performance, that one. Against an opponent that looked like he was three weight classes smaller. And he STILL had to gut out a tough decision to win.

It was a very exciting fight, but Holyfield made it easy for him by fighting the wrong fight so stubbornly. There have been worse champs for sure, but I just can't understand what anyone sees in him.

And a bigger Holyfield barely beat an out-of-shape Bowe in the rematch.
And then Bowe knocked Holyfield out in the third fight.

Also, I'd dispute that it was "easy" for Bowe to beat Holyfield.

Tommy Gibbons is pretty much reduced to a measuring stick for Dempsey (for good and bad) so, there you go. What's the definitive result of the Gibbons-Greb session btw?

    I'd say - who isn't "inconsistent" ?

He compares pretty well against some of the better heavyweights of the 80s and 90s.

I hear what you're saying, but it's still a pretty thin body of work on which to place any huge praise on a fighter. Holyfield was also very uneven as a heavyweight. A warrior to the core, and must be admired because of that, but he was the perfect foil for a bigger, stronger guy like Bowe to build his reputation upon.

I expect Bowe would rather have had a foil like Floyd Patterson or Michael Spinks to build his reputation upon.

    Most of them are uneven.
    I suppose there's Marciano.

For what it's worth, I also think Liston is overrated. For the illustration you make here. I also believe people make way too much of Tyson's win over Spinks.

Good call, but the light heavyweight title was effectively held hostage in his era.

That is another key factor in his not getting his due!

The Gibbons Greb session was even on paper, but with Greb winning at the more critical times.
