because he fought great between 160-175lbs and beat ATG's at 175lbs while weighing less. He could be rated great in all those division just like Charles never won a title at 175 is rated # 1 by many.
Interesting, would like to learn more about this . When did Wills refuse Tunney? Who did Wills fight instead? When and under what circumstances did Tunney testify?
Tunney hired Tim Mara, an influential New York bookmaker who would go on to found the New York Giants NFL team, to build Tunney's stature as a challenger for Dempsey by enlisting reporters to write about the match, greasing the palms of politicians to ignore Wills' claim, and working on members of the NYSAC to allow Tunney as an alternative to Wills. One of the first things Mara did was to challenge Wills on behalf of Tunney. Wills declined because when this challenge was issued the NYSAC had already publicly notified Dempsey that he had to defend against Wills or be stripped. It would have made no sense for Wills to fight yet another eliminator (he had fought several already) when he stood on the cusp of a title shot. Mara later sued Tunney when Tunney refused to reimburse him for his troubles. In court both he and Tunney admitted that then challenge of Wills was a publicity ruse and they didnt intend to follow up on it. It also served the duel purpose that when Wills refused, as was expected and as anyone would have done in his situation, Tunney drew the color line stating that if he won the championship he wouldnt defend against Wills. At this point Wills hadnt lost to Sharkey and still stood as the most dangerous challenger to the title so Tunney effectively engineered himself a way out of fighting him.
But his opponents were not around SMW. That bears weight in his p4p and LHW rankings, not in his SMW ranking.
Louis only fought two black me in 26 title defenses. I think Benny Leonard is a good example of a fighter who fought the best black and white fighters out there.
Yes, Tunney was light years ahead of any athlete I can think of in the way he manipulated the media and those around him to suit his own ends. Whatever you say about Tunney, and there is plenty to criticize, he was a master tactician in and out of the ring. The guy was a like a general who manipulates the battle field so that when the fight starts he has left nothing up to chance.
Not to mention Leonard reigned for 7 years while Greb reigned for 2. In retrospect it's no wonder the black press respected the guy. More than 10 years fighting ex-champions, reigning champions and top contenders of every size until he gets his hands on the title. 2 years as champion and he puts the title on the line against Flowers.
