M, my reason is right before your eyes. Harry Greb and most every top fighter of those long ago days fought almost 10-20 bouts a year against whoever the boxing public demanded, thus creating great competition for boxing fans to relish. My small example mentioned a fading one eyed Harry Greb with about 290 bouts under his belt licked a great prime Toy Bulldog Mickey Walker in a 15 round war July 2, 1925 at MSG, and 14 days later this ring marvel licked the rising star Maxie Rosenbloom
on July 16, 1925...If this fact doesn't show the utter contrast
between a Harry Greb of the roaring 1920s and a Floyd Mayweather who fights his picked opponent twice a YEAR, well
what would you respectfully suggest.? Maybe I growing up in the 1940s watching a Beau Jack, ike Williams, Willie Pep, Kid Gavilan, Billy Graham, Ray Robinson, Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore and other fighters fight about monthly, was spoiled by those halcyon days, but I wouldn't trade those days for a part time fighter Floyd Mayweather, for sure...

Why would I suggest anything? I thought the objective of this thread was to identify the boxer you describe in the opening post... and not to come up with the best example that illustrates why Greb was so wonderful... or why Mayweather is such a sissy. Sorry if I misunderstood the question.

Highlighting Greb's immense achievement in beating both Walker & Maxie in 14 days, despite being one eyed and a faded force strongly emphasises the huge gap between men of his ilk and the current crop.

walker and rosenbloom are men of that ilk too, yet greb, one eyed and fading, beat them both in a fortnight.

Something doesn't add up there because that makes it look just as much like men of that ilk kind of sucked as it does make greb look great.

apparently the idea greb 'fought like he was just out of a straightjacket' is a positive thing, I'm writing it off as **** journalism because it is not good for any boxer to be described like that.

disclaimer: I do not endorse the first 2 sentences but logic typed them out so I may as well press submit.
