How high could have been his ceiling, sans the epilepsy?

His domestic and continental European opposition through his British and EBU reigns was only so-so, and Joe Manley hardly rates among the best IBF 140lb titlists (picking up the strap from Gary Hinton in a rematch after beating Hinton in a 10-rounder a year earlier, after which Hinton and Dominican light welterweight champion Reyes Cruz with his padded-up record were tossed into a vacant title opportunity when Aaron Pryor retired after making one defense over Hinton) with his actual best wins arguably coming over lightweights Freddie Pendleton and Howard Davis Jr. - but capture the belt he did, and by KO to cap off a rout. He also defended once, retiring tough Akio Kameda (the former Japanese 140lb and 147lb national champ - no relation to Daiki, Tomoki, or Koki - who thrice before had been stopped but always went out previously on his shield, including at the hands of Aaron Pryor in a WBA 140lb world title challenge, knocking the Hawk down in the 1st) after six rounds, pitching a clean sweep all the way.

He was by this point already pushing thirty and unlikely to improve a lot, but how much did he leave on the proverbial table? Did his medical issues rob him of perhaps a few more solid defenses?

As it stands he does have an immortal legacy, with only eleven other men in the gloved era - starting with Jack McAuliffe in the 19th century - able to say they were both world champion and retired undefeated. As with Sven Ottke, the inclusion of Marsh on this list as technical necessity belies the fact that neither of them, based on their body of actual work, deserves mention alongside the likes of Rocky Marciano or Finito López.

I don't think anybody believes that Marsh was a potential ATG or that he could've achieved enough to surpass the fortuitous happenstance of landing a spot in history as part of that rarefied twelve - but might he, with more time, have proven a respectable champion and not a fly-by-night? :think

...and then WTF happened with him and Frank??

Marsh was about to fight some big star (Camacho?) at the time it all went pear-shaped for him. He wouldve lost that one - thats how I felt at the time.

Marsh was amazingly mentally tough - physically tough too, super fit etc I suppose, but it was his mental toughness that stood out for me. But he was TOTALLY punchless. I dont think he EVER stopped anybody - amateur or pro.

All the more remarkable he went as far as he did.

Terrible shame how it all ended for him.

(BTW - do people feel he really WAS the shooter? Or not?)

Start a thread, and if that nutter is on his break, he will sabotage it with ramblings of things like 'yeah but Vitali was a borxer-barxer at the Olympics with lenno but had that Ali/Foreman feel etc'

    BORKED!

What's constructive about that? That's all he does. Oh, and then he'll upload an Audley Harrison video and take over the ENITRE thread with them.

Nothing 'grasser' about it. He just kills this forum off.

How would Camacho vs. Marsh have played out?

Or unification attempts with the other title holders around during his short IBF reign? (WBA: Oliva/Coggi; WBC: Hamada/Arredondo; WBO: didn't yet exist)
