I think when you box yourself you appreciate technicians a lot more

I've boxed on and off for the past 12 years. I've had a few fights and sparred at a good level. Now I think when you have been in the ring and experienced how hard it actually is control a fight and nullify your opponents offense you really appreciate guys like Ward , Mayweather and Rigo. I hear so many posters saying that these guys are so boring and put them to sleep but I really enjoy these type of fighters. When you have a good strong fighter pressuring you throwing bombs it is a nightmare. To keep your arms in position to protect your body while also having a defensive strategy for avoiding the array of punches that a fighter can throw is so difficult. Its hard to appreciate if you haven't been in there. When you see Ward on the inside with his little tricks and positioning his body in a way where he can land but his opponent cant you may think hes dirty and s****py but there is a method behind it all.

You see so many guys with no defense and with power in the gym that although it is exciting it just isn't impressive. We all like a good war but i really appreciate the guys who are skilled in defense , positioning , countering and control. I don't find the guys who are elite in these areas boring.

 

I disagree a little - it depends on your natural style. I can box a bit when I have to, but I was always a swarmer who used brute force and speed. Nothing I hate more than somebody sticking a stiff jab in my face and limiting engagement by excessively running away when we could have a brawl and give the audience a show (and let my size and strength for the low weight carry it, sometimes) . I can move, block, and limit engagement too, but that is boring. When one guy just doesn't want to fight (Corey Spinks and sometimes the Rigo style) it feels like they aren't there for the right reasons. I think some people are naturally aggressive and temperamental and it comes out quite a bit.

Rigo frustrates me to watch quite a bit. Floyd doesn't (usually).

When two guys have in mind to counter exclusively off the back foot the fight blows.

In a way I agree, it's rare to have a technician in the ring and most of the times a good 90% don't know how to deal with them.

Where I do disagree some is really at what level and experience your at, cuz I've seen some brawlers school slicksters at their own game. So really to me it isn't really about style, it's how good you are at using your style vs your opponents styles. Adapting, adjusting, etc.

 

I've never boxed but I love watching technicians. There are boring technicians and exciting ones IMO. Boring ones are the ones that aren't that great at it and have extremely low output. I find Mayweather fun to watch but Ishe Smith kind of boring.

I agree I like Sergio Martinez, Cotto and Marquez who I consider technicions.

 

They are fun to watch also.

 

I box regularly, and I agree with the OP. I never used to enjoy watching slicksters growing up, and now - as much as I still prefer action fights, I can find myself being blown away by some of the technique on display. And shouting out at the TV in the same way I would after witnessing a great brawl!

 

Martinez was anything but a technician. he was athletic and unorthodox with a hell of a big punch. Marquez was/is a master technician. Cotto is somewhere in-between boxer/ slugger. All great to watch

 

Problem is when you get a fight like Lara v Avarez. Lara did not let his hands go enough and although he had Canelo frustrated, he just didn't make him pay.This was a bit of a frustrating fight to watch some would say boring and they wouldn't be wrong.

 

i sparred with big heavyweights in cuba and i am not even a heavyweight more of a mw and held my own

 

Whenever a fighter is at the top of his game, whether he be brawler, technician, swarmer or a combination of all three, he is enjoyable to watch. My favorite style happens to be the technician with good pop. I love to see a master T at work. It's like watching a bullfighter evade the bull and punishing him for his mistakes, and eventually stopping him.

I'm unconvinced. Tyson Fury boxes against himself from time to time, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't like technicians much. QED.
