Mike Tyson - The Hardest puncher in Heavyweight History.

For years we have listened to all this rubbish about Earnie Shavers or George Foreman being the hardest punchers of all times - Rubbish!
Mike Tyson is without a doubt the harder puncher. Berbick, Stewart, Bruno, Tubbs, Thomas, Spinks, Truth Williams, Ruddock all quality fighters who could not handle Tyson's power punching. Every fight of his career, Tyson was the guy with the big punch. Even in the twilight of his career when Tyson was a `shot fighter`he still punched hard enough to hammer guys like, Botha, Neilson, Savarese & Golota... Foreman was nothing but a Big old heavy puncher, he was not a puncher who put fighters to sleep with one punch. He never broke fighters bones with a punch like Mike Tyson did. Foreman put a fat`Joe Frazier down 6 times, Yet referee Arthur Mercante claimed that when he stopped the fight, Foreman was knackered and Frazier was ready to go (fight on). Shavers never knocked out quality opposition, other than Ken Norton. his opposition is very mediocre. Love him or Loath him, Mike Tyson was the hardest puncher in History.

definitely up there, in terms of being a knockout specialist, in his prime there weren't many better at it

Nope. Hardest hitter is Shavers. Best finisher is Tyson. I think Foreman hit harder too, but...Tyson has more one punch knockouts than Foreman.

Definitely up there with the best punchers only Louis a better mix of hand speed and power probably only because his shots were so direct and created some really weird reactions in his opponents but Tyson needed his technique to be right when he just wailed away he was not as heavy a hitter as say Foreman - but Definately the best puncher of his generation but there some other good ones - I'm thinking Tommy Morrison springs to mind here

By S. Lott's opinion (Who's Tyson's best friend and he was in the D'Amato team) the prime Tyson was one of the hardest puncher ever.
I think this opinion is acceptable.

You are confusing power with effectiveness.

They are really not the same thing.

Tyson was one of the greatest finishers of all time, if not the greatest, but you could probably find a couple of contenders in every era who hit harder!

Without power nobody can be effective (especially a 5'10" heavyweight).
Honorable mention the speed is based on power.
(A top sprinter is much more stronger than a long-distance runner.)

Tyson had the best combination of speed, power, & ferocity I think. Not necessarily the biggest puncher but the best combination of offensive skills.

Is Deontay this generation's version of Mac Foster or Courage Tshabalala?

Tyson's one punch power is somewhat overrated. Obviously his power was ferocious, but as others have mentioned, it was power combined hand speed and accuracy that made him such a dangerous puncher. Among HW champions, Foreman, Liston, Lewis, Wlad, and maybe Dempsey and Louis all hit harder.
