As much as I want this belt to be on the line for GGG, Lee - Quillin is a better match up tbf. But it really sucks for Golovkin not to be able to land those unification fights - it's like in these days it's better to be show some level of mediocrity and limited abilities to get undeserved fights. A classical example is Soliman choosing Taylor to fight on ESPN instead of GGG on HBO.
Another thing is Quillen likes to just stand his ground and let opponents come to him. He lands his best stuff by catching guys when they're trying to close distance or countering and Lee is taller and longer. Andy will be able to land from outside Which could force Quillin on the front foot where he's even more uncomfortable. Close to a 50/50 fight probably give a slight edge towards Lee.
This fight was mooted before. Quillin was one of the many 'big names' Andy has been linked with over the last 2 years. Was it last May? It never came to anything (neither did Andy v GGG etc etc ), but it was proposed. Maybe a lt of the groundwork as regards negotiation has already been done? Be interesting to see if it DOES go ahead this time...
Irish fighters can make more money fighting in America than at home. Especially onme like Andy who was based in America for years. This would be about his 5th fight in MSG. Also, he gets the American TV audience. HBO probably wont pay to air a fight in the afternoon from Limerick. If it doesnt make financial sense, Andy wont fight.
The problem with those fights for Andy is that Andy is in as much danger of losing to any one of a half-dozen domestic Irish Isles pugs, who despite being as good or better than the vastly overhyped Quillin are not nearly as well known (eg Murray, Macklin, CEJ, BJS, Ryder, Blackwell etc ) as he is to a 'known' world-level 'star' like Quillin. Quillins profile far exceds his ability. He is the best cost-benefit risk for Andy. Lets face it - do you really want to see Lee-Nielsen? Or would you prefer Lee-Quillin?
Much as I dislike Quillin, I still see him as the superior boxer in this match up. Lee can punch, and that's about it.
If this lands on HBO and gets us the winner vs GGG down the road, I'm all for it. If it doesn't, fukk it; let Andy have an easy payday in Ireland first, then come to the US for that big fight on HBO.
The crux facing Andy and his management though, is precisely that there really arent any 'easy paydays', any 'safe' opponents, any 'gimme' fights for him. Just look at how he struggled with Fitzy, Horta and Jackson. To be absolutely sure Andy beats the guy, the opponent would have to be so weak the fight would be an un-saleable farce. That is why he may as well go for the 'big one' versus Quillin IMO, if it is available.
People are just voting on how Quillin has (or hasnt) looked lately, instead of on what we thought he might be able to accomplish a couple years ago.
Spot on. Polls like this swing massively This content is protected according to the '****ed off factor'. Right now Quillins ****ed-off meter is way up in the red. Andys stock has never been so high, in contrast. THAT is what we are seeing in the poll results.
...and knee-jerk reactions based on Lee vs. Korobov, too. (forgetting that Lee has looked even worse in recent years than Quillin on numerous occasions)
