I do add that I rarely disagree with you, but when it comes to Thais they deserve to be respected just as any other fighter would.

Hipster? **** that, you're the hipster coming in here 'correcting' me. (when I obviously know full well he goes by Jomthong Chuwatana)

I'm not a fan of the Thai fighters' practice of whoring their names out to gyms and corporate sponsors (which I'm not saying is the case with Jomthong, as I don't actually know, but the fact that his birth name differs from his ring name is a red flag to me for any Thai). I choose not to to give those entities free advertising by perpetuating those fake names. So my blanket policy with all Thai fighters (whether or not they are participating in that practice, as I don't have the patience to pore through each one's biography to figure out who is and isn't using a sponsorship name as opposed to, say, a "Sugar Ray Robinson" or "Felix Sturm" type of ring name contrived for non-whoring purposes) is to simply call them all by their birth name. That's my prerogative, and that's none of your business, and you ARE being a hipster to cry foul or act like that is somehow disrespectful of me when my intention is never to disrespect the individual fighters themselves. I only take exception with the practice of name-buying. (which, I recognize, isn't the fault of the fighters, and they're often put in a position financially where not succumbing to such practices would hamper their earning potential - trust me, I get it...)

Case in point, I'm the biggest Terdsak Jandaeng fan you'll ever find. I have massive respect for him. I will never in my life call him Terdsak Kokietgym, on principle. His name is Terdsak Jandaeng and because I respect him that is what I choose to call him.

That's just my policy where that's concerned. You can do whatever you like. I'm not judging you for using the fake names Thai fighters use. I just choose to use their birth names, as is my prerogative. You're being the ******* for making an issue of it.

'Whoring'??? You really don't have a clue! Massively disrespectful and ignorant of Thai fighters.

These guys make hardly any money whatsoever. All Jomthong will get out of it is training at Chuwatana Gym for free.

And Jomthong is his CHOSEN name.

You can do whatever you like, but it's bad practise in my opinion, and you are absolutely a hipster for it.

I'm the one coming in 'correcting' you...to use the name that the fighter is known by. Okay then.

Certainly makes things easier for boxing fans eager to check him out if they want to.

    We agree on that, absolutely.

I just don't think my use of birth names is disrespectful. Not of the boxers, anyway. (just the gyms and sponsors that hijack these kids' identities)

Maybe stick to first names then? Jomthong, Srisaket, Suriyan etc? I think that was a policy that Graham Houston went with

No, that is fair enough, I can see your point there. I agree with 'boxing prospect', at least use their forenames :good

Please know as well that these arrangements are often very beneficial to the fighters, who get screwed over with purses and whatnot.

    Argument over mate.

Okay, he chose the Jomthong part. Chuwatana is still a gym name, and I don't feel like making every mention of Phawachart into a billboard for them. I'm choosing not to be part of their advertising scheme.

As for making things confusing - tell it to any fan tracking down footage of boxers that have switched gyms/sponsors a bunch of times in their career and have ten different names floating around... :yep

    That works, actually. :good

My only aim is to avoid crediting an entity instead of the individual athlete.

Good recent example, "Knockout CP Freshmart" - for the life of me, after many hours of scouring the net, I couldn't find any reliable info on his birth name (as I believe "Niyomtrong" was just another moniker, or if not it still only provides half of a real name). So I did actually take to just calling him "Knockout".

Agreed 100%. Try tracking them down on foot in Thailand!

I found Jomthong though :yep :deal Really sweet kid. Hope he doesn't get badly hurt tomorrow. Horrendous weight cut, even for him.

    Thank you!!!!!

...but I've been in the habit of calling him KO for a while (and it sounds wicked cool) so I'll stick with that.

But definitely good to know. That was driving me nuts.
