but it genuinely was a step up, because joe had been a largely national champion up till lacy.

Joe was a good champ but his resume is littered with mid level guys ..

I couldn't call him great because he never had a great performance !

true he was good enough to win the biggest three titles, but didnt prove he had the cutting edge top level to defend them more than once.

if joe was American he'd have been a good NABF title holder for a few years waiting for the opportunity for a jeff lacy to come along so he could feed off the weakling.

I'd be more inclined to argue with you if you watched more than the Manfredo fight. Here are some highlights since you don't have time:

Tell us about Hopkins, RJJ's, and Floyd's "great performances."

Obviosuly not. Zaggers was much further removed from his peak. But his haters will be here in force shortly to argue Hopkins was shot-

According to Joe's haters on here, that's the only reason Joe won........yet the same characters was also the one's confidently predicting him to school Kovalev a couple of months back.

So to answer your question, he was shot if it suits their agenda. He was not if it doesn't.

Nope, in all honesty I dont think hes even shot now and has only begun to look like hes slowing down. He went in against Kovalev and despite losing the majority of rounds had the odd moment now and again, just Kovalevs power stopped Hopkins from fighting on the inside.

Same in the Calzaghe fight, Joe's speed and work rate was just too much for Hopkins to take and it forced Hopkins to resort to his dirty tactics in the fight,

Its hard to pinpoint Hopkins' prime because in his younger days he didnt have the same craftiness that he developed later in his boxing career as a light heavyweight and some can argue his 175 campaign was more impressive in terms of quality opponents with his most noteable middleweight names being bloated welterweights in Delahoya/Trinidad instead of Tarver, Pavlik, Pascal, Cloud, Wright, Shumenov etc.

Hopkins wasn't shot, just not in the best fitness cardiowise for the fight.

No, he wasn't shot. BTW, he also beat Slappy; that was a horrible decision.
