Mayweather isn't scared. He's fighting Pac. It's more of the public perception that he is fighting Cotto after the Canelo news, and writers are loving it... but in reality, when it comes to the actual negotiations of what is happening, Cotto isn't in the equation. Floyd is very focused on Pacquiao.
These ranting to the public could be point to any strategy. In Pac's case, for him to say the fight is close is for him to get the people's hopes up, making Floyd to be the bad guy and crush the people's hopes when he doesn't sign to Pac's terms. This not only puts Floyd in a bad spot, it makes to where it's the only fight people expect from him and ruins any other fight he may be thinking of. For Floyd, he is saying, no, no, no, Pac, we are not close and sends out strong Cotto rumors to punk Pac and and/or get the public mentally prepared and really drive it home to Pac that he is willing to go elsewhere unless Pac signs to what Floyd wants. Really smart usage of the public by both sides if you ask me. Let's hope that's all they are doing and one side gives into the other to get this made.
