Pérez is jabbing at Acosta from outside, getting off in twos and threes without taking a receipt. Acosta is leaning back as he creeps in, causing most of Pérez's jabs to skid up his glove-tops and make glancing contact, if any. Acosta's own jabs fall short, when he even snaps them, most of them just pawed out in a slow-motion tomahawk. Three minute long jabbing contest, edged numerically (thrown and touches) by Pérez.

Pérez is using head rolls and turtle-withdrawals, dodging Acosta's jabs up top. Body jab by Acosta while circling wide. Combo by Pérez lunging in and then stepping outside to reset. Jabs on the belt line by Pérez. Acosta readies a counter left hook and looses it over the back of Pérez's neck like a mousetrap as he comes in jabbing the body. Pérez is picking off Acosta's jabs on his right glove, punching out into them slightly. Pérez sidesteps and scratches Acosta with a left hook.

Pérez is stepping back and landing what Malignaggi terms a check-hook on Acosta. Double jabs and long catapult rights by Acosta, landing as (unintentional) rabbit punches as Pérez bows down in anticipation. Pérez is bleeding from the right eye. Pérez is jabbing into the guard. Acosta fires a combo. Pérez raises his gloves to block and then scurries left and lands a counter hook, pushing Acosta into the ropes. Pérez is trading jabs with Acosta in the middle of the ring, neither quite landing, both pulling their heads back. Big chopping left hook by Pérez, awkwardly hitting Acosta near the spine and resulting in a tie-up as Pérez spins himself off-balance
