I don't mean to be rude, but why is he even fighting later this month? It will have been, less a week, two full years since Williams vs. Botha, when he was basically laughed out the door in boxing after nearly getting kayoed late by a very shot White Buffalo and needing a blatantly corrupt distance change midway into the contest to escape with his zero. He seems to have since gone back to rugby, which is what he is actually known for and talented at. Leaving well enough alone the way things stood, he can say "I tried my hand at pro boxing, don't you know, went 6-0 with three knockouts and fought a 4-time heavyweight world title challenger" and have the unshakable stats to support his boasts. Why return and jeopardize that? After that close a call? Why tempt fate once again? I don't think he'll lose to Welliver, mind, just on Welliver having grown beyond useless and Williams being fitter and the better athlete by orders of magnitude, but he obviously isn't lacing up the gloves just for that single outing. It must be a tuneup for something...but what? A payday? Isn't he well taken care of in rugby? Does he think he is actually going somewhere, with his focus split between two sports and having already found out his level - not good enough to legitimately defeat a morbidly washed-up fat old contender? He can't have spent much time in the boxing gym in the last two years, one must figure - else he would have been, well, prizefighting instead of apparently reentering the scrum full-time. He was rumored to be in the David Tua sweepstakes last year, but that would've been a one-off novelty act type of deal and not taken very seriously as having an impact on Tua's legacy (even negatively, if he lost) or SBW's nonexistent one (even if he won). What is the aim here? Beat a 'name' in Welliver, and then what from there? Go for the domestic title? Parker would absolutely pulverize him. Even the middle aged Meehan would probably knock him out. I don't see the point.
It appears he is angling for a fight with Paul Gallen, a highly regarded and venerated Australian sportsman, who is also on the card and who I'm pretty sure you have done a RBR on before. Even though Money Bill's progression is quite a bit more advanced, I dont think he wants to make the jump to the next stage of his boxing career just yet. Just get some attention and make a bit extra dough on the side. Gallen was to retire at the end of 2015 but he may go on another year. I think he was being talked about as the next governor general but that is a few years away before that is possible.
Ah, that's right, on the Geale vs. Wood undercard. Gallen vs. Purcell was nuts. http://www.boxingforum24.com/showthread.php?t=499670&page=2 I take it Williams vs. Gallen might be big bickies? (disproportionate to how much it would mean in the grand scheme outside the continent?)
I can see Meehan absolutely obliterating SBW. I mean, hell, we saw how he dispersed of Cameron, someone who is many many levels above SBW. I think Meehan could actually give quite a number of contenders trouble. He has no need to bother with cans like SBW if he was to come back to fighting.
Meehan's son played with SBW at the Roosters and they are good mates, I'd expect the same would apply with Meehan senior and they would never fight.
The honorable thing, should they get by Williams and Welliver respectively (safe enough to assume) would be for Botha to get a rematch. Opportunity for rredemption for both. (and semi-legitimacy and probably a good enough win to say "there, see, I cleanly beat at least one respectable name" for Williams, or vengeance and probably a good enough win - and payday - to retire on for Botha.
Money talks! true boxing fans such as us all can see Sonny's career for what it is... but can u blame him? he's fighting relatively safe fights, likely making a fortune for himself and the casuals eat that **** up and really buy into him being the next heavyweight champ nonsense! on the other side though.. SBW VS Gallen??? really?? While no world beater SBW is miles ahead of Gallen in boxing ability! it would be a walk in the park for Sonny!
He is probably fighting Welliver for the same reason he has fought his last 6 fights...... Charity. He is heavily involved in several charities mainly KO to Drugs. When he fought on the Aukland Earthquake Appeal his purse went to the charity, roughly $100,000. SBW is a Multi Millionaire, his net worth is estimated at $15 million. He needs the money out of boxing like he needs a third armpit. If you listen to any of his interviews it is clear he has no claims to be a serious threat to any heavyweight contenders. Like him or not he does appeal to many sports fans. The CEO of Easts Leagues Club said the signing of SBW was worth $5 million to the club. Don't think you will see him fighting any one of real ability any time soon.
No KKKEL, I doubt he LIKES getting punched in the face. The Botha fight clearly showed that. Just like the many Rugby League,Union and AFL players have done over the years he will get in the ring and the proceeds will go to charity. The EVENT is a fight night for Charity. This may come as a shock KKKEL but thousands of fighters climb into the ring on a regular basis and get punched in the face for free Some do it to represent their country, others do it to see if they have what it takes to be a pro and some do it because they just like to fight. If you think SBW fights to provide him with an income then one fight every 2 years is not going to cut it. atsch
Im all for the support you are giving SBW but chill man. The dude has jumped about 10 different ships in the last 5 years when it comes to sport...and why? MONEY! Every time. He has teamed up with one of the biggest scumbags in Australia, Khoder Nasser. Made a fass of the sport and kept quiet since. There is only one thing these guys care about and that is milking the public for all they are worth. If he didn't care about money, enlighten me on why he did not start out as an amateur? Why do his fights have to be PPV? Why didnt he start out as an amateur, or fight on local fight cards and draw crowds to local events to support the up and comer's? The reason why so many people dislike him, is because he is one of these B class celebs, that comes in and brings a ****ty audience with him to a great sport. Look at what has happened since he has been on the scene. NZ boxing is filled with **** like Jamie Ridge boxing, on a card that you pay 40 odd dollars for? Yeah, no thanks. I would much rather see up and coming fighters proving that they deserve to be where they want to be.
Well said and couldn't agree more. Looks like the heat has died down from Parker/Browne calling out SBW, so now he slides back in to milk the public some more.
