This guy may have his physical limitations but it doesn't stop him from delivering.

Cotto doesn't respond in time and gets KOd without even stepping in the ring and instead of postponing a fight again, Canelo takes on a last minute fighter, not a scrub or bum off the street but respectable opponent with proven power in James Kirkland. Yes he isn't the #1 guy in the division, but let's be honest here, he's more dangerous and makes for a more exciting fight than Algerie or Maidana, a real Super welter with Power.

Props to him and GBP for not moving just to appease to Mayweather's demands and for knowing that real fans don't support Mayweather on May 2nd unless its Pacquiao.

You guys may not have to like Canelo, but he seems like a great example to other fighters.

    This is a good read.

    Canelo is a throwback, IMO.

Alvarez has deserved props for his opposition for like 4 years now (when considering how much nonsense people used to rant on this site about him while he was still 20 years old is crazy). Nothing new here with Alvarez fighting good opponents given his position and using any amount of logic and realism...

He had his first loss already, there's nothing to overprotect anymore.

Well you're saying give his position, as if every top fighter is fighting the best when they aren't.

canelo is a ****** and a coward.... he talks sh8t, yet he's scared to give rematches to lara and trout. his record is a fabrication built on fighting older, smaller guys.

At least he fought them, unlike somebody who campaigns there... Besides, aren't they LMW's like Canelo himself?

What blown up LW's has he fought?

-Juan Manuel Marquez, the future Hall of Fame legend? Yes he fought JMM without Marquez having fought above 135 at that point although within 2 years Marquez would weigh the exact same 142 pounds and go on to do something special to a great WW. At the time it was the first fight back from his layoff/retirement; you know this.

-Robert Guerrero once campaigned at 135 before becoming a consensus top 5 WW when Floyd signed to face him.

Are fighters always "blown up" versions of whatever weight they competed at years before, or how do you view it? I'm curious... Is Floyd a "blown up Super Featherweight?" Is Amir Khan also a "blown up Lightweight?"

I was (somewhat obviously) referring to his current position of Cotto not agreeing to terms, having already beaten some of the top 154 guys, having already recently fought the P4P #1, etc.

Let me explain: mayweather started his career as a super featherweight.

    In his last 5 bouts:
outweighed by by maidana by 10 lbs
outweighed by maidana by 20 lbs
outweighed by canelo by 25 lbs
outweighed by cotto by 15 lbs
outweighed by ortiz by 14 lbs

then he outweighed marquez by 4 lbs....

so, i guess you'r right he does nothing but pick on little guys.

Good point. Fighters grow, as do people, with age of course. I think its safe to say the Marquez that Floyd fought, however, was 'blown up', in the sense that he didn't put the weight on correctly, with any nutritional science behind it; he just packed on muscle and drank his own p!ss. In his later ventures up at WW, he had a proper team behind him and thus made the weight more professionally, and performed accordingly. But yeah, Guerrero and Khan have campaigned successfully at the higher weights for long enough to count as genuine 147'ers now.

And I think its fair to say, if a fighter campaigned at lower weights earlier in their careers, it doesn't necessarily mean they are 'blown up'. In Floyd's case I think it's only Juan Manuel that truly counts as a 'blown up' LW...?

Canelo is a good, throw-back fighter, who I'm pretty sure would face anyone, and has shrugged the 'soft opposition' image that enshrouded him in his earlier [Matthew Hatton etc] days...Fair play to him.

Fact is is that Floyd campaigned at these weights before the fighter he fought at WW did. Anyway, if he's that small, why not actually fight at LW etc?

How do you know he outweighed Marquez by albs when his fight-night weight wasn't disclosed?

@ Nonito - RG had like one fight at WW. His accomplishments were at LW etc, JMM was DRAGGED UP.
