when did they come about and should they be outlawed?

Or are they good for the sport and do we need them?

whats the purpose of weight DIVISIONS when catchweights allow virtually any weight agreed upon (mostly ones that suits the A* fighter)

please discuss and enlighten my ignorant mind on the matter

Nope. If you can't make the weight, don't try and campaign there.

I'm with BEATDOWNZ on this one. I hate catchweights. And the "A-side" NEVER puts themself at a disadvantage with a CW, no matter what their fans say.

We don't "need" them, but they're fine. They're as old as boxing and it's really on Pacquiao/Mayweather related hysteria that's made them an issue.

    Good and bad

Sometimes they help 2 fighters at separate divisions meet when they otherwise wouldn't

I don't agree when titles are won and lost at them

Mixed bag though with so many weights unlike the old days they seem less necessary

    No.

No need to make up a weight division in between 2 weights. If a fighter wants to fight for a certain belt then either don't moan that the champ wants to fight at that weight or just simply don't fight at that weight.

Gene Tunney asked for catchweights. They existed in the 1920's.

They have been around for yrs but nowadays fighters abuse them and it makes titles meaningless ie Pacquio vs Margarito for a belt

They've been around a very, very long time, but have gotten pretty ridiculous in the past few years and seem to exist just for one fighter to get a mental edge or knowing that they "won the negotiation".

You have catchweights that change it one pound, and the other guy never has a history of losing that extra pound anyway.

I pretty much agree here - catchweights dont bother me atall if used so two fighters can meet in the ring when they otherwise wouldnt be able to, but as ko kidd - I do not agree when titles are fought for at a catch weight , makes no sense - the belt if for a specific weight class - if you cant fight at the weight class then you shouldnt be holding the belt (or a contender for it)

Yes we need catch weights. They enable us to get fights that we wouldn't otherwise get. They make those fight more fair and competitive.
