Duran struggled with guys who weren't there to be hit and who could move and had speed. I would favor Pea Whitaker, SRL, Benitez, Hearns, PBF, SRR and Kid Gavilan over him at 147 and probably more if I thought about it.. Duran is not this mythical unbeatable force people make him out to be, was he great? Yes, but not the greatest ever not even close. Erik Morales will become very overrated in time like Duran because people like his machismo.:deal
If anyone is over rated by these comments it's Floyd. Floyd isn't and never will be, in the same league as SRL, Hearns, Benitez or SRR. If it were true that he was in the same league he might be able to beat Duran at 147 or at 154 but he's shown very little power at these weights. And none of these fighters, even Whitaker, is beating Duran at 135. You can't just get on a bike and hope to win. Many fighters have tried that only to either loose lopsided decisions or to get caught by Duran. So I don't really see how the man with the brittle hands beats the hands of stone.
He didn't struggle against Buchanan, who is a text book description of that type of fighter or the Viruet brothers who also are from the same mold. I could go on and on, Mercel's another fighter of this style. Ishimatsu is another one as is Bizzarro. So you really don't know what you're talking about. Two or three extremely elite fighters beat Duran at 147 or 154 and all of sudden anyone who can move can beat him. SRL would beat Floyd rather easily and most posters who have seen both Benitez and Floyd fight, pick Benitez to beat Floyd too. And Floyd ain't stepping in the ring with Hearns or SRR, so he should be entirely eliminated from this conversation altogether.
PBF is already the greatest fighter of this era. Benitez was never the greatest fighter of anything accept schooling Duran.:deal Pea Whitaker would beat any version of Duran, if Duran quit while facing SRL he would quit the sport after facing Whitaker who's probably the worst stylistic match up for him.:deal
We don't know because all we know for sure is that Floyd ducks anyone who might pose any kind of threat to him. so he isn't stepping in the ring with any of these fighters. And I would bet your trailer that Floyd wouldn't last the distance against Hearns the way Benitez did. And you can say what you want about Benitez all it tells me is that you were too young to actually watch the guy fight. As for Whitaker that fights been done to death in classic and most posters feel that Whitaker simply doesn't have to power to hang with Duran. Duran at 135 was really a treat to see. Best fighter I've seen in my lifetime (although him and a prime Ali are pretty close)
:rofl Please don't bring up no-hopers like the Viruet brothers like that strengthens your argument. The fact is elite level guys like Benitiz tooled him with superior defense and counter punching he could be had by this so don't make it out like he couldn't. Duran wanted to force you to fight and if you didn't play his game he could be beat.
Threats are all relative you call them threats but anyone in the world 154 and down would be a underdog against him even now at 38.:deal That right there shows how great he is. I would pick Hearns to beat PBF a horrific styles match up for him as well as SRL who was much bigger but Benitez I would say PBF would beat him at his own game.
By fighters like Benitez and SRL perhaps, but not by the likes of Floyd or Whitaker. The seond SRL fight was a bit of a farce if you know the history behind it, and it was a surprisingly close fight before the 'no mas' incident. but Duran was in great shape against Benitez and he simply got beat. But Benitez was a world champion at 17 and had won three titles prior to turning 23 so he was a damn good fighter.
At 38 Duran beat Barkley at 160, the same Barkley who knocked out Hearns. As for PBF he simply doesn't belong in the discussion. Benitez is certainly on the same level as both Hearns and SRL. Benitez was the same size as SRL, which was 5'10" so I don't know what you're talking about with respect to SRL being so much bigger than Floyd but Benitez not. They were actually very similar fighters, with SRL having a bit more pop in his punches and Benitez having a better defense. But Benitez knocked out Hope at 154 to win the title, in what was called the knock out of the year so those three fighters, Hearns, SRL and Benitez were all very elite fighters. Up until the Hearns fight, Benitez was probably the best of the three in terms of accomplishments.
This is one of the greatest matchups you can make at 135 or 147 lbs (where both men were small welterweights.) Floyd didn't have a long run at the LW division but he was an offensive and defensive virtuoso, incredible handspeed, foot movement and overall ring generalship. He would've been the toughest test for Duran BY FAR at 135 lbs. (no disrespect to De Jesus or Ken Bucchanan, but those guys aren't in the stratosphere of a Floyd mayweather) I don't think either guys dominates the other, but for the Pro Duran crowd, Floyd absolutely had the style to beat Manos and I respect the hell out of Duran for his accomplishments in the 70's and 80's. It's just Floyd has a style that could trouble and confuse Duran. If Benitez did it and Ray Leonard as well, than I'm sure Floyd could. He's the best defensive fighter of the bunch, the quickest as well with his footwork (being able to dart in and out of the pocket whenever he pleases,) and if he decides to go on his bicycle and pot shot Duran while keeping him at bay with his leads, than I could see him eek out a decision. It's not out of the realm of possibility whatsoever. That being said, I think it's a 50-50 fight. In my opinion, Floyd was in his prime between 2001-2005 and Duran was in his probably between 1976-1979. It would be one of the greatest possible match ups you can make between 2 small guys. People can bring up Castillo all they want, but Floyd had an injured shoulder in their first fight, and if you take him at his word for it (which I do considering how well he looked in their rematch,) than this guy really has never been challenged by anyone since he turned professional. So the idea that Duran is going to knock out a guy who would be the best defensive fighter he ever saw (as well as a top tier chin,) is silly to put it nicely. There's been many fighters that Duran went the distance with that were nowhere near mayweathers skill. On a side note, I would've loved to seen Mayweather against Benny Leonard at 135. 2 of the most skillful fighters in the history of the sport.
It's not a farce the man quit he had enough http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard–DurĂ¡n_II Just another excuse by Duran apologist play up his wins and downplay his defeats.
funny its ok for black posters to support there own but when whites supports there own its racist double standards at its finest
