Great post! I think the uninformed boxing fans don't understand fighting off the backfoot can be effective for some fighters. oscar always fought best off the back foot I think, did the same thing vs. shane but was under Mayweather sr then and wasn't bouncing or moving quite as much, more flat footed then.

Exactly and it all comes down to WHO TOUCHES WHO MORE! How much leather is placed on the other mans face. Also, who inflicts MORE DAMAGE. Tito could barely land a significant punch, Oscar showed zero damage yet tito was busted up, bleeding from the nose and eye swollen half shut.

I actually just watched some of that fight just now, and 5th round Oscar lights tito up with several beautiful combo's snapping tito's head back. Tito landed ONE significant punch, a hard right and Lederman gave Tito the round! LOL Almost wonder if Lederman was on the take too.

 

Its to bad DLH did'nt take advantage of Tito's inept aggression and popped Trinidad consistently round after round.

Inept aggression beats inept running (so called DLH ineptly boxing off the backfoot) anytime!

 

The record books have Tito winning... case closed

 

De La Hoya even though I hate to say it because he was such a ***** in the last 3 rounds.

 

Trinidad didn't win the fight, but Oscar did lose it

 

When you say De La Hoya didn't take advantage do you mean by not out landing Tito by almost 100 punches or by out landing him in power punches as well because Oscar did both those things.

Fact is this fight shows a lot of people really don't understand how to properly score a fight. Some ignore body shots or jabs, or those who go into a fight with a preconceived idea of who the puncher is and who then lessen the importance of the supposedly lesser punchers shots and over estimate the significance of the supposedly bigger punchers shots and then see a single decent shot as enough to win a round where they have been out boxed and out punched for 2 mins 30 seconds of a round.

 

what were the stats in the second half of the fight?

 

I couldn't find a full round by round break down but I was able to find some details.

Total punches landed Oscar 263/ Tito 166, power punches 124/120
Total punches landed up to round 6 106/56
So total punches in last 6 rounds would be 157/110

So Oscar out landed Tito in the first 6 and the last 6 rounds, though it was closer in the second half. Throughout the whole fight Oscar landed the harder cleaner punches, Tito never landed with anything that was really flush while Tito himself walked into countless flush right hands. So you can't even give Tito the edge by saying he landed the harder shots because he didn't.

When you consider Hopkins landed 260 against Tito's 129, yet that was seen universally as a schooling while some think Tito did enough to win, it's bizarre especially when Hopkins adopted much of what De La Hoya did.

 

maybe the problem with stats is that they provide a 'blanket stat' over the entire fight without showing the real story
I thought it was pretty inconceivable that Oscar could lose this fight at the halfway mark, but the dynamics changed once he took the pressure off
there's nothing like watching the fight (without numbers)
