most top athletes are elite in more than one sport - or at least have more than one good option boxing is rarely a 'good option' in the US, because only a select few make good money $$$ in sports is off the charts, and an equally talented footballer/boxer is unlikely to choose boxing i'll be very surprised if the US gets close to dominating the HW scene again
Michael Jordan considered to be the best basketball player of all time couldn't cut in the minor leagues of baseball. Joe Frazier was an ATG fighter but came in dead last place in the Superstar competition against swimmers and skiers. Only a select few make the NFL where the average career outside an elite QB is about 3 years. Last I looked the USA had one MW in the top ten (Peter Quillen) can't make an argument that all our MW's have gone to the NFL or NBA. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union we have seen an influx of fighters invading boxing Klitschko's, Golovkin, Kovalev...there is simply more global competition now.

I'll tell you what, go down the list of the 100 greatest heavyweights and find me one that was a football player or basketball player or even wanted to be that. Those gents came from the streets and hard times. They were hard men in hard times and mad as hell and beating the brakes off a buster was right up their alley. Men settled disputes with their fists. Fighting was second nature. It's not that way anymore and that's mainly the reason that there is a drought of heavyweights in the USA. In those European countries, they are living that scenario right now. They are hard men with power. Not so much skills but they take advantage of our trainers and develop into excellent fighters with skill and power.
Boxing is frowned upon by the family because the mothers don't want their child being hit and instead encouraged them to play basketball or football instead. I wanted to box when I was 7 but my mother wouldn't let me. So I took up karate instead. It wasn't until I was 24 that I could give boxing a real shot. If it wasn't for the family talk I would have boxed when I was 7 leading up until the now age of 24. But it's the family influences that are killing boxing. They all saw "Ali" and what happened to him so it scared them off from the sport and now it's all about football and basketball. You will NEVER see a natural heavy weight start young EVER again in the states... Even if they have more potential then mike tyson they would still choose football or basketball. The best times to grab a heavy weight is when they are between ages 18-25. I say those ages because by the time they are 24-25 College is over and they have time to make for themselves. By 18 they have graduated from high school and they are making life decisions. So the new era will be age 18 to learn boxing...

So, it's not a valid excuse, because everything that is problematic in the usa it's ten times more problematic in other countries. Just to give you an example, in Italy it's even forbidden to show boxe matches on the public television :hey Nobody even know what boxe is, in Italy. It's not a case that Italy's best boxers came from Italians living in other countries: Rocky Marciano, Calzaghe... And basicaly every other country in the world only cares about football, F1, cricket, tennis, basket, and few other sports. Usa has, by far, the biggest number of active boxers, and it's not even remotely close with other nations. Exactly. You think NFL is popular in the states lol. Boxing seems to be concentrated in certain areas though where you have quality gyms and trainers.
