So then Walters vs. Orlando Cruz would probably have much deeper tensions underlying it than whatever trans-Caribbean antipathy exists between PR and Jamaica. :yep

If he somehow beat Walters, it would make Cruz perhaps the biggest sports icon of the LGBT community and instantly a crossover star (which they were kind of grooming him to be after he came out, before Salido peed on his parade)

High pressure seems to bother Lomachenko a lot, he seems to switch off for a while whenever the opponent puts more pressure on him, it could be troubling for him. That's why out of featherweights I think Gradovich has got the best chance against him.

I don't know if Walters would even fight Cruz. lol If Walters were to lose to Cruz, he would have to move permanently to the States.

Not to get on a liberal soap box or anything, but in case anyone isn't aware I wasn't joking about Jamaica and the Anti-Gay thing, not to throw off on Jamaica but the country often gets overlooked by the US media, Human Rights Watch has basically declared the island paradise with its prevalent anti-gay violence pretty much a terror state for the LGBT community. Hopefully Walters is more enlightened than some in Jamaica. I'm from Miami so I hear a lot about Cuban, Haitian, Jamaican and PR etc politics and I follow HR violations pretty closely anyway and its sad that everyone bashes Cuba whose HR violations are not nearly as bad at this point as some of the stuff currently going on in Jamaica and Haiti. So I figured I bring a little awareness to this issue. Now I'll climb off my obnoxious liberal soapbox IB. Sorry about that.

    :good

I was joking about the scenario but I would actually be rooting for Cruz against Walters if they fought. That would deal a critical undermining blow to conventional ideas of "macho" straight male identity that pervade in both South/Central American and Caribbean culture, and underpin the systemic intolerance found in those areas, if openly gay Cruz took out a feared KO artist bogeyman and reigning champ in Walters (all the better that he represents the backwards and hate - saturated Jamaica, fairly or not - same as Max Schmeling, though not a Nazim himself, came to symbolically embody Nazism and turn Louis' rematch triumph into a galvanizing critical mass of social opinion in the US, and the stuff of legend transcending mere sport)

I know you were joking, I have a really good sense of humor, but I just used your post as a jumping off point to post the links, but yeah I'd be rooting for Cruz too, I've seen Caribbean Macho bullying culture up close and its not very pleasant, there's a lot of effeminate Latin and Black guys when I was in school I've seen viciously mocked and picked on and it irritated me then and still does, as far as Walters goes while it would be nice if he were enlightened, but I have a feeling he's most likely not, the first thing I thought when I heard the Axeman moniker was, wow what a unfortunate nickname for a Jamaican, in light of the machete and axe attacks on gays.

If Walters fights Cruz, it will end in brutal KO win for the Jamaican:lol:. So your gay poster boy :smh will have to find an easier road to a title. And comparing this fight to the Louis/Scheling contest in its political importance:patsch, wise up:deal

Obviously he would be a huge underdog against Walters. That's why I phrased my original post that CST80 responded to "if he somehow beat Walters..." - but the point I was making was about my rooting for him if that ever came off, not that he would be likely to pull it off. I'd fully expect it to end in a vicious KO by Walters, though my hope would be for anything tilting it Cruz's way, even a cheap disqualification (ie KTFO illegally by Walters nailing him with a shot while he's taking a knee or something) for the reasons mentioned.

As for its sociopolitical importance, did I say it would be as big as Louis vs. Schmeling II? No. I said it would transcend sport as that match did, albeit (obviously) not on that scale. I never said the modern struggle for tolerance by the LGBT community was up there with anything those persecuted by the NSDAP had to endure, and wasn't equating them as being of interchangeable scope. That is, however, a valid concern in society at present and the effect of ushering in social change (if not the scope) would mirror that of Louis' KO.
