Good pick. Ward had things his own way in the 'Super Six' to such an extent it made a mockery of the thing. Can you imagine what the American media would have said if Calzaghe, Benn or Eubank entered an international six man tournament and was the only man to never leave his own country? I think they'd have been slated and their tournament win tarnished badly.

I think that to the objective observer, the resumes of most greats improve under the microscope.

Many people are subject to sentimental bias, and confirmation bias, but the hardest form of bias to eradicate is that stemming from your own area of specialisation.

    Jerry Quarry...

Yes, he went 1-0-1 vs. Patterson. Patterson was past prime, both were knocked down. A case can be made that Patterson deserved to win these fights.

Yes, he beat Ron Lyle by decision. Lyle would improve. Lyle had some good wins but they were quick KO wins at that point,

Yes, he stopped Ernie Shavers in the 1st round. Good win for Quarry. Shavers was not the most durable HW, but a 1st round KO was a bit of a surprise. The quick start by Quarry paid off.

He was stopped by Chuvalo... he could have continued, but he was definitely hurt.

He was stopped by Frazier x2... he put up a decent effort for a few rounds in their first fight.

He was stopped by Ali x2... he didn't offer Ali much of a fight either time.

He was stopped by Norton... Quarry was not at his best but I don't think it would have made a difference. Styles make fights and Norton was always going to be the better fighter. Quarry didn't have enough power to disrupt Norton.

He was clearly outpointed by a past prime Eddie Machen.

He lost a decision to Jimmy Ellis.

People make too much of his wins over the likes of Brian London, Alex Miteff, Billy Daniels, Thad Spencer, Buster Mathis, Brian London, Jack Bodell, Larry Middleton, Randy Neumann, Lorenzo Zanon, and even Mac Foster.

Honestly, Jerry Quarry was a decent fighter but he is so overrated on this forum that it's ridiculous. His biggest fans excuse him for losses he wasn't even competitive in. They even make claims about his chin and durability that are far from true.

No shame in going 0-5 vs. Ali, Frazier, and Norton (all losses by stoppage) but he really wasn't able to do much vs. these men... even though other fighters were. Fighters who aren't as respected as Quarry is.

Look, he could take a good shot but he was down more than just a couple of times. He was down vs. Roy Crear, Al Jones x2, Floyd Patterson, George Chuvalo, and Joe Alexander. He was stopped 6 times. He was cut a lot, if you get cut and can't finish... you have a durability issue... your skin isn't durable enough!

    Great Thread

    Ray Mancini
    Kostya Tsyu
    Brian Mitchell
    Arturo Gatti

Apparently, the Boxing Hall of Fame doesn't scrutinize resumes as part of their criteria for Admission.

Frankie Randall was screwed out the of the second Chavez fight and denied a third because of this gravy train. Once Chavez "won" the title back from Randall, King was able to keep the gravy train going for a couple of more years. This was amazing when you consider how much Chavez had faded by this time.

I am shocked actually, that besides myself (and only in a meta sense in passing) nobody has even mentioned Tyson, let alone carted out the pitchforks.

He is subjected to ridiculous scrutiny and held to some of the most unfair standards you'll find.

Tysons record is pretty good when you put it under a microscope. Put Wlads under it and you'll find its utter garbage.

    Dubblechin,

Nobody used claim Ward was the best in the entire world and now he's almost a non factor, having been stripped of his #2 p4p spot.
His best win was Froch who he me in a final of a tourney that pitted all the best smws in the world against each other.
Saying he butted Kessler to a stoppage is ridiculous.
Oly two butts maximum can be counted in the fight and before the first mid way through , Kessler hadn't won even a 10 second stretch of any round.

Ward beat Kessler in a way no other man could. All these travelling excuses. Who the hell cares. Kessler travelled far further in his career to win. A ring is a ring.
Ward was being showcased for US audiences and that meant staying put to fight on prime time.

When Sky have prize fighter , everybody have to come to England. Not the same , but thats just how it works.
