    :thumbsup

They got too much flack over Cold Lake, IMO - that album is ****ing hilarious as long as you don't take it too seriously. :yep

(Just listen to it as though it were CF making a parody of cheesy glam metal, and it rules...)

Kind of the same deal with Carcass & Swansong, although in that case I actually consider it a good record on its own even though older fans saw it as them 'selling out' because it was so far away from grind. But really bands like In Flames moved even further away from their original sound and don't get dumped on for it nearly as bad.

I went about it backwards - I got into Florida DM after having already discovered Scandinavian. (but had already liked 80's thrash - which paved the way for American DM - when I was much younger)

I managed a band here, actually, the drummer used to play in A.C. (I'd spell it out for you if you're unfamiliar but they're both filtered words...:D) but yeah, they didn't go anywhere, too unwilling to compromise yet they somehow wanted to get on the radio. :blood

That could totally be a random shuffle playlist on whatever cheap-ass mp3 player (never had an iPod until recently) my broke ass had like 10 years ago.

Yeah, that kills a lot of BM for me, having always been totally irreligious and therefore not really scandalized by Satan worship the way people raised Christian would be, just comes across super lame to me.

Especially the knuckleheads that obviously took it to heart, like Vikernes or the scumbag (extremely talented, but a scumbag) from Dissection.

Still, every once in a while, in small doses, that stuff can be fun even once you get older. :firedevi:

If this place had "Asian & general below-featherweight boxing" and "extreme metal" sub-forums they'd probably contain 95% of my posts. :)

Didn't Dkos have a little people's lounge thread on here?

I love Swansong its a great record, I don't care what fans think as far selling out goes, they're just depriving themselves of good music when they act so particular. However as far as selling out goes Samael took a huge nosedive after Passage they almost went techno but have found their way back recently and they dropped the Satanism which is a plus.

My love of metal goes back to the 80's as well, Speed, Thrash Slayer Metallica Testament etc. all metal appealed to me even some Glam:oops: Whatever the subgenre. I loved Danzig and Samhain before it. And then I went deeper and deeper into the underground until I knew everything I could know about it that I could.

Yeah all that stuff with Dissection and Mayhem was a real turn off to me. And its kind of hard to separate the music from the guys who make it. Although I love all of the Norse Odin Metal because I can laugh at that at least.

As far saw the 95% comment I really wish there was still a lounge because I would really excel in that forum.:yep

Also when I use to sing if you can call it singing I sounded like David Vincent from Morbid Angel. With a touch of Jeff Walker or Mikael Stanne.

I saw Morbid Angel open for Motörhead, weird pairing but hell of a show (among the loudest I've been to)

Nice. Loudest show I was at was Slayer. Missed the opening act (Damageplan) because I had to work. They got a good reception and said they'd be back....But six months later Dimebag was murdered on stage...:-(

Loudest show I went to was Type O Negative, granted that may have had something to do with me standing directly in front of their speakers (about 5 feet away in a club), and I couldn't hear very well for about 8 hours after the show. Great show other than that though.

    That's **** luck!

I actually was invited by this crazy Albanian kid in high school (he and I were the outcasts, both had shaved heads and wore black and made all the adults nervous in the wake of Columbine, then still very topical, by our mere appearances...but we never really bonded for some reason despitd having so much in common and just kept to ourselves - probably exactly because we had being surly miserable aloof *****s in common :yep) to go see PanterA themselves, at their peak. He told me in passing while both of us were serving detention that a buddy of his had to bail leaving him with an extra ticket. I would have gone but was grounded. :verysad

I have seen a few of the side projects, though (mostly Phil's) - Down a whole bunch of times, Superjoint Ritual once and Crowbar (if you count them since Rex was a member for a while) a couple. Never saw Damageplan or Hellyeah.

Try standing three feet away from the speakers at the end of a My Bloody Valentine set. :scaredas:

BTW, Drew, not sure if you saw my question (back when the ratio of topicality favored boxing and not music :yep) a few pages ago.

I'd love to hear a detailed impression of Galero if you've indeed seen a full match of his, as it sounded like you might've.

Sorry, man. Missed the question before.

Haven't seen Galero in action, save for the sparring clip. Basing my pick more upon what I've seen of Wanheng before. While Galero does indeed seem to be defensively responsible and fleet-footed, I have to wonder whether that will stand him in good stead if he's unable to match Wanheng's work-rate, or to do enough damage to stop him inside the distance. Wanheng seems rather sturdy, so I think this goes to the cards...in Thailand...with a champion that will likely play the role of aggressor...so....:yep

I was so lucky to have graduated in 98 before Columbine happened because I'd definitely been unfairly suspect to the teachers, I was considered "at risk" student before that happened, I'd have really been screwed, I had Phil Anselmo "Revolution is my name" hair (still do) wore black, never smiled, angry as hell, and was a smartass who the teachers couldn't stand.

I never got a chance to see Pantera either:twisted: sadly, but I saw Down twice and COC when they opened for Metallica in the late 90's. I refused to go see Damageplan:bart the singer was a blatant Phil clone, and I resented that. Hellyeah is a little better but not much, because I was never a Mudvayne fan either.

Yeah, same logic here with all we have to go on. Galero would have to be more than "a little special" (which is what I've heard said about him, even before his first quasi-step-up against Mabao) to smuggle the belt out.

...in broad daylight no less. :D

Oh yeah, Corrosion, seen them a few times as well. I think between Down itself and the constituent bands all the members of the "supergroup" are from, I've probably seen over a dozen shows.

Same applies to SJR (I've seen Hank III do his tripartite country/hell-billy/punk-metal set many times, and chatted with him. Nice fellow but total space cadet, or else he was impressively high considering how well he managed to play)

..and yeah, the Abbott brothers seemed the less appealing side after the rift. Anselmo had much better taste in music (a lot more varied, anyway...Vinny & Dime pretty much just listened to stuff like KISS, Ted Nugent, and David Allan Coe...:!:) and was a hardcore boxing fan so my allegiance was virtually a moral imperative.
