Despite Arum's comments, no TV deal reached for Mayweather-Pacquiao bout

    By Kevin Iole

Odds of a fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao dwindle by the day, in large part thanks to promoter Bob Arum's loose lips.

On Thursday, Arum told the Associated Press that Showtime and HBO had come to a deal to finalize their side of talks to broadcast the highly anticipated super fight. Arum, who promotes Pacquiao, told veteran AP sports columnist Tim Dahlberg that after the TV issues had been resolved, there were only two outstanding issues before a deal is made.

But within moments of the story's release, representatives on all sides of the negotiation vehemently denied the story.

One person who requested anonymity told Yahoo Sports, "Believe me, if this fight doesn't get done, it will be because of Bob Arum. Nobody can figure what he is doing or why he is doing it."

Mayweather denied a deal has been reached in a post on social media. He also noted that his team has worked hard to try to make the fight, countering some of Arum's assertions such as when the Top Rank CEO said that Mayweather "is running like a thief."
Mayweather posted a photo of himself in Pacquiao's hotel room in Miami where the two met after bumping into each other at American Airlines Arena, where they attended an NBA game.

    Mayweather wrote:

I set up this meeting with Manny Pacquiao to get this fight done but they will continue to tell the public it's us and that's NOT TRUE.
No one in an official capacity was willing to speak on the record, other than to deny that a TV deal had been reached and to discount Arum's earlier public comments that an announcement for the fight was imminent.

In a Jan. 30 story in the New York Post, Arum said he expected the fight to be finalized in the next couple days.

That clearly has turned out not to be the case, as have most of Arum's pronouncements in the negotiations for a fight the sports world has been eager to see for five years.

Talks are at a sensitive stage. The fight is tentatively set for May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and there are now only 87 days until the fight occurs. While a Mayweather-Pacquiao bout wouldn't need the lengthy build-up traditional for most pay-per-view boxing shows, that's not the case if they opt not to fight each other. At that point, they're going to be scrambling to get the word out.

But Arum's insistence on public comments are clearly an impediment to reaching a deal. That is one point that people on both sides of the aisles in these talks agree about. Top Rank president Todd duBoef is irate at Arum, his step-father, but has essentially thrown his hands up in the air and said he can't control Arum.

Even Pacquiao's team has gotten upset at Arum's willingness to go on the record with comments that often don't add up.

Pacquiao has been in Washington, D.C., the last several days and on Thursday attended the National Prayer Breakfast.

Wow that article is pretty damning of Arum. What is funny is people who have an agenda against Floyd will read this and still devoid Arum of any blame lol. Even Manny's team are starting to get frustrated with Arum. It's all Floyd fault though isn't it lady's and gentlemen?

Kevin Iole is okay, but he isn't close to being as credible as Pugmire, Espinoza, and even Rafael. He'll tend to piggy-back off what those three say.

Though, I've caught him on multiple accounts when he reports something contrary to Pugmire, and Iole ends up being flat wrong. He doesn't have as great of sources like the others. He will say, "No progress," and Espinoza and Pugmire will report on the contrary.

FightHype is extremely positive about the fight getting done, and if they are positive...you can be (cautiously) positive. Because if there would be any outlet paving the road of excuses for Floyd, it would be them.

Plus, Iole has been negative all together. Two weeks ago he was saying how certain he was that Mayweather/Cotto was happening, and how these negotiations were just falling apart. Not true what-so-ever.

Official: Progress not complete on Mayweather-Pacquiao TV deal

    By LANCE PUGMIRE
    contact the reporter

Momentum for the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao mega-fight continues, although not as rapidly as some might interpret.

Minutes after Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum told the Associated Press that Showtime and HBO have resolved differences to stage a joint pay-per-view broadcast for the welterweight world title fight, being planned for May 2 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, another official involved in the talks balked at that assessment.

The television official, talking under the condition of anonymity because of an agreement to not disclose deal points publicly, told the Los Angeles Times there are “a handful of meaningful network and fighter/promoter issues remaining.”

Showtime has two fights remaining on a 30-month contract with Mayweather, while HBO airs Pacquiao’s bouts on pay-per-view.

Neither the television agreement nor fighter contracts have been signed.

The television official agreed the conversations to stage the long-anticipated are narrowing, but made it clear there is still work to do, as often happens in working to finalize a deal – the final points can require the most work.

“We’re down to them and haven’t resolved them in the last week,” the official said. “Discussions continue and each of those issues is important. There are still some fundamental points remaining.”

Arum told AP, “We had four issues and we resolved two. Now we're working on resolving the other two. Unless something else comes up at the last minute, that's what my take is.

“There's a lot of devil in the details and that's what we're sorting through now. The remaining issues are obviously important to the participants, and are things we have to work out.”

Contacted by The Times, Arum added, “I believe the issues are being resolved – everything.”

The television deal was moving toward a sharing of network talent.

Although not finalized, Thursday’s talks closed with CBS/Showtime's James Brown designated as the fight host, with HBO’s Jim Lampley serving as play-by-play broadcaster, Showtime’s Al Bernstein as lead ****yst, with HBO’s Max Kellerman and Showtime’s Jim Gray assigned to fighter interviews.

Reached by telephone, Lampley said he has not been informed of any Mayweather-Pacquiao assignment.

While one official told The Times the networks have agreed that each will broadcast a fight replay, the television official also said that element was not finished.

Well even Rafael tweeted the networks still haven't reached an agreement which contradicts what Arum said yesterday

    Dan Rafael @danrafaelespn · 9h 9 hours ago
BOTH networks have told me in the past half hour that, no, they DO NOT have #MayweatherPacquiao broadcast deal, regardless of Arum comments.

I did read your previous post. That's just your take on things however it doesn't mean it's true as you have no idea what Arum is thinking.
