(but there are over a dozen people in the ring, each taking a turn bowing, one guy reading a speech into a microphone...the actual fight will be a few minutes, after the pageantry...)

 

Tewa Kiram (Teerachai) vs. Nthuthuko Memela, 12 rounds @ welterweight

 

The champ is 28-0 (22), the challenger 10-1-2 (7).

Pretty good power on both sides.

Both have also tasted canvas - and both against their best opponents to date. (Memela down in his bid for the South African 147lb title; Teerachai in his first match with Bezhod Nabiyev, getting up to win a UD and later stopping Nabiyev in the rematch)

 

Round 1

Teerachai is walking forward, jabbing up into the air to shoot away the much taller Memela's right jab. Memela keeps circling away to his right, very wide, letting the jab flow, light and busy. Teerachai is plowing through with right hands on the body after checking Memela's incoming southpaw jab from above with his a raise of his left glove. Teerachai is lining up right hands on the chin as Memela tries for a southpaw 1-2 on the outside. Teerachai clips him and backs him up, crowd gasping.

Round 2

Teerachai is hurting Memela with rights on the body. Teerachai is creeping in, legs spidery, flicking left jabs up to play patty-cake with Memela's right jab. Teerachai catches most of the Memela jabs he isn't shooting into on the back of his left glove, held against his cheek. Teerachai rushes in, throwing a heavy right hand up top behind the jab and then hooking as Memela backs up. Teerachai runs in with a 1-2 and slips on an invisible banana peel, heel sliding out from under him on the canvas - with Memela taking advantage, landing a quick slapping right hook on the face just before Teerachai goes down! The ref waves his arms down by his waist, gesturing "no-no" - ruled a slip. Teerachai is lucky. Some hard-ass refs could've strictly interpreted the "if a punch lands.." rule and called that a KD.

Teerachai is pushing Memela into the ropes with brush-aside backhanded jabs up top and rights on the body. Memela is pumping in light straights on the face with his back on the ropes, scoring points, but hurt frequently by Teerachai's single power blows.
