Could Sergey Kovalev become an ATG at 175lbs?

If he were to beat Pascal, stevenson and become a Unified lhw champion with a few defence under his belt before he hangs them up.

In my opinion He already is a h2h beast at this weight, he just needs to prove himself in the bigger fights, longetivity and resume. :deal

By the way i rate him more than GGG.

The only chance he has is if in addition to those fighters mentioned, Ward steps up and establishes himself as a credible 175lber and Krusher obliterates him.

In other words, no. The talent pool isn't deep enough at 175.

I don't think so, at the minute he ranks below Chad Dawson and Antonio Tarver and still will do if he beats Pascal and Stevenson.

The quality isn't really there at 175, he'd need to reign for a long time and add the significant names, ie Ward specifically.

I'm not well enough up on them to rank them effectively, but the likes of Spinks, Loughren, Moore, Charles, Bivins, Conn, Muhammed, Qawi, Hill, Foster, Fitzsimmons, Tunney and arguably Jones Jr should be up there.

ATG meaning what? Top 5 at the weight? 10? 15? 20? What is the cutoff?

I'd say five is well beyond reach given what is available for competition and his age. Ten unlikely. Fifteen, eh, implausible. 20 is more than doable. Anyone saying otherwise is a little drunk on nostalgia or has some other agenda.

Not for me but in no order (if you want to look up their boxrecs or youtubes):

    Bob Foster
    Roy Jones
    Mike Spinks
    Qawi
    Conteh
    Archie Moore
    Ezzard Charles
    Conn
    Bivins
    Harold Johnson
    Hopkins
    Loughran
    Greb
    Tunney
    Kid Lewis
    John Henry LEwis
    Calzaghe (if you include 168)
    Dariusz
    Tarver
    Dawson
    Virgil Hill

I'm sure some would add some 70s guys I missed off.

I wonder how he could rank below dawson. Who was knocked out by stevenson in one round, and lost to pascal. That makes little sense to me. If Kovalev beats the men who beat dawson then surely he goes ahead. :think
Dawsons resume at 175 is quite stacked, but doesnt h2h pay a role.

Infact if he beats pascal and stevenson he goes ahead of dawson and tarver at 175lb imo

i Rate him higher than GGG as well. I thought that he shocked the **** out of Hopkins with that 1st round kd and the intelligent way he fought a measured, controlled fight. Honest to God, I thought "oh ****, the ol' racist cherry picker has found another straight ahead, unskilled white stiff to pump that unrealistic reputation of "greatness" that everybody gets so wound up about. Kovalev impressed me and I expect bigger things for him...probably my favorite active fighter.

Dawson might have dropped off in his 30s but beat a better Hopkins, Adamek, Tarver x2, Glen Johnson x2 and Diaconu.

Kovalev can't compete with those names (ie no one on par with Adamek or Tarver) unless he beats Ward.

I was very confident in kovalev, He dispatched of cleverly easily, And cleverly beat murat more impressively than hopkins. Also shumenov is a part time pro boxer, he hasnt had 200+ amateur fights like kovalev who is well schooled and had top fights battling it out with the top russians for superiority. I feel Kovalev puts his punches together better than GGG, And better than anyone else in the light heavy division and every punch hurts, jabs to the body are sickeners let alone his righthand.
I was more suprised Hopkins lasted the distance, than Kovalev dominating him. What a chin bernard has. But no one has outboxed him like that before, Hopkins is still a problem for everyone in the division not named Kovalev.
Pascal now his chance to become the man at 175lbs, Strong, athletic and iron chinned. I think Kovalev stops him. :deal

Out of dawson's best wins. Pascal is better than Johnson, Stevenson is only slightly worse than tarver, but is more dangerous. Adamek is a top quality win, it will be hard to beat that.

You cant really say he dropped off that much, He Arrogantly went down and drained himself to ward, got outboxed and beaten up. And then knocked out in one by a devasting puncher in stevenson, however stevenson is a bit of a one trick pony, dawson shouldnt off been caught.. :bart

Loses must surely factor into a fighters resume aswell. You cant just say ' he was shot' ' he was finished' For every circumstance.
Kovalev may get beaten anyway by pascal and then this thread will look a bit premature and ill have egg on my face. :patsch
