    Unambitous

He could have taken many more fights against higher quality opposition but he was happy being the big fish in the WBO's small pond and didn't challenge himself for the majority of his career.

    Underachiever

He was no doubt talented, he had it all, speed, decent power, boxing skills, iron jaw and insane work rate and stamina. But he could have had a deeper resume and been more ambitious.

Too many years facing soft opposition, I used to be a big fan of his, first saw him fight Delaney and was impressed. His performance against Eubank was breath taking and boded so much for the future but then that's when it went wrong.

Instead of building upon what was then a very good win he then fought a journeymen and a 38 year old and this was the pattern of his career. The odd good opponent like Reid, Woodhall, Brewer but the rest a bunch of C level fighters who had no business in challenging for a world title.

Luckily he came to his senses during the last few years of his career probably because he got divorced in 2005 which saw him lose a lot of his money. Had it not been for that divorce he may have never gotten the desire to challenge himself and we would be seeing Calzaghe in the the same light as his peer Ottke.

Just looking on the front page of threads on ESB, and at a glance, I notice 5 Calzaghe threads and noticed at least one other mentioned him on the TS page.
The man has been retired for years, yet still he is one of the most talked about fighters on ESB, which shows what a great fighter the man was.

No he had an extremely ugly and difficult to score fight with top 5 P4Per Hopkins which splits opinion on who deserved to win but which Calzaghe got the nod for on the day for his workrate and the fact that Hopkins' play-acting to buy a breather worked against him.

His best win other than Hopkins is Kessler who was in his prime, undefeated and holding two world titles while in the best run of his career.

His fight against Jones was a just for the paycheque against a big marketable name in his final fight before he went into the retirement he'd been planning for since the year before.
