What do you think is the difference between Sam Peter's punching power and Earnie Shavers' punching power?
Two years before he fought Shavers, Mercado was knocked out early by Weaver and Tate. Shavers knocked him down, but Mercado got up to win- this was a recurring theme in Earnie's career. The man hit damn hard, but his status as a puncher is overrated considering how few contenders he knocked out and how many more fighters got off the canvas to beat him. His record against decent- not ATG's, not HOF's, but just decent heavyweights just isn't that good. There's Norton, and that's a very good win even with the style advantage. Other than that, he was a perennial bridesmaid. In a sense, he's that era's Ray Mercer minus the granite chin. Too much credit is given for losing efforts against the big names and putting on exciting fights, while the reality is they were more likely to get beat by a journeyman than to capture a title. Ray still gets a ton of mileage for taking 4-5 rounds off of Lennox in a fight that could have legitimately gone either way, but in the rare instances where he actually beat rated guys, they were come from behind knockouts where he was getting outboxed. Jesse Ferguson was his Bob Stallings.
Shavers would be to Wladimir what cryptonite was to Superman in Superman Returns. Minus a bald Kevin Spacey.
As for the post, Wlad knocks him out cold early. There wouldn't be the need to take time to wear him out. Earnie left himself wide open because of how he planted himself and opened up when he threw. It'd be a replay of the first knockdown of the Pulev fight (only that would be the end of it), or if Earnie really came out on fire, the Derrick Jefferson fight. Simply too much precision and power. For as much as people are talking up Shavers' power here, I don't think they're grasping that Wlad can one-shot him with either hand.
[yt]KToXxi8ANwc[/yt] Shavers drops mercado with a huge right hand, Mercado is hurt in that round, shavers almost has him out of there, when he continue the assault and lands longright hands and left hooks, in the next round shavers has faded he has punched himself out imagine if wlad had clinched and put his 40lb weight advantage crushing down on shavers he would be even more tired, Mercado proceeds to give the exhausted shavers a beating from round 4-7 and stops shavers in the 7th. Mercado didnt have the skills or size of wlad. Shavers didnt have the chin or stamina of brewster or purrity.
Both clearly hit hard but when people talk of Shavers power he's usually regarded as one of the hardest punchers ever along with guys like Foreman. I've never heard comments like his when opponents comment on his power. I would say Peter in terms of raw power is a level below guys like Shavers, Foreman and Tua. He clearly hit hard but few reach the upper echelon of power punchers, I wouldn't even rate Lewis or Tyson's power on the levels of the guys like Shavers, they were better punchers but didn't have the same raw power.
Now, Shavers with the kind of durability and late round tenacity that Brewster or Mercer had would've been something. As it stands, he only had 3 stoppages after the 7th round in his career.
Yeah , he quit. Don't argue against facts you can see on film. If you think that scratch was a fighter ender , you obviously don't watch boxing. Wlad couldn't beat Peter as comfortably as Chambers could. Chambers wasn't good enough to compete at Cruiser weight. Toney stood right in front of him and Peter could not do anything to him. Why is it only Wlad had to hang on for his dear life and resort to constant cheating to win? Hilenius toyed with Peter like he was nothing. Peter was slower and less skilled that Shavers. He was useless yet Wlad couldn't cleanly out box him given a second go. Wlad is an overrated joke. The proof is his opponents and how those opponents were handled by other fighters. Shavers would lose to Vitali but could well knock Wlad out. He mixed it at higher level and his best win is better than Wlads best win. He gave hell to much better fighters than Wlad. Wlad could only do Shavers what he did to Povetkin. Thats not winning. It wasn't even boxing. He deserved to be DQd 10 times over. Nothing suggests he could just out box Shavers when he couldn't out box lesser fighters than him . Thats not opinion . Thats fact based on observation
Yep Shavers was nothing special he just got his butt kicked when heavyweight boxing was at its most popular time and lost to almost everyone he stepped up to overrated hype job living in peoples memories as a mythic monster but when you actually watch his fights and examine his record shows how hollow it is even his vaunted power. dude's professional record looks like wilders his first 33 fight he won by ko were against bums most with very poor records like 7-26 ? losing a decision to bob Stallings 21 and 24? Shaver had decent power yes but not anywhere near where people claim.. you take out the wilderesque competition he feasted on before stepping up and the nubers dont look so good for him.
[yt]jVo9WKOVC80[/yt] Jerry quarry 6'0 72inch reach stands infront of shavers, brushes off a few good shots from shavers. Jerry barely lands a clean punch on the low dipping earnie but still has him on qu33r street. down goes shavers. Dont know where he is, eats a few more left hooks, ref waves it off. Quarry destroys Shavers 1. Quarry hasnt got half the power of wladimir. Anymore evidence needed. That the small acorn didnt have the chin or speed to get to wlad. Shavers best KO's: Ken Norton - glass chin Jimmy young - Good chin, no power David haye has more skills and far more speed than shavers, and he couldnt land. Povetkin has knocked out bigger men than shavers, he couldnt hurt wlad. Lamont brewster was only stopped by Wlad himself and it took 8rounds for helenuis to stop a 37yr old shot version of lamont. Ross purrity in 53 fights stopped by Vitali in the 11th after taking a pounding he was 35 and a journeyman, stopped in his 2nd fight in 89' and stopped on cuts a year later. Granite jawed
